I definitely like the idea of taking notes too! Also, yeah some of these books definitely don’t seem like they’re for children below age 1, lol.

We've begun!

Since it’s now March 1st in my timezone, the challenge has officially begun!! You’ve got 31 days to read 75 children’s books! Yay! A couple of things to keep in mind…

  1. The “age level” of these books is self-reported, I think, so there may be instances of books that seem way above their actual level.

  2. Don’t worry too much about understanding everything. The volume of reading material should mean that language will repeat in different contexts, which should aid comprehension. That being said, if you’re totally lost, looking up things is always nice too :D.

  3. You have 15 minutes to re-open an EhonNavi book once you’ve first opened it. After that, once you close the reading window, you won’t be able to re-open it to re-read the book. If there’s language in it that you want to look up later, you could take notes, or take a screenshot (I personally use Skitch).

  4. Use the second post in this thread to keep track of your progress or the app I linked to in my first post. Also, feel free to share your progress, your thoughts, questions, favorite things you’ve read, what you’re learning, etc etc.

  5. HAVE FUN!!

I’m excited to start reading. Thanks everyone for the interest in my little idea. Happy reading !

The weird kana combos to represent foreign sounds were really interesting. Like ゔぃー、たぶいゅー、 ずぃー. And so many new words (especially animals) and onomatopoeia. One thing that confused me was the use of the honorific お in front of a lot of words where they normally don’t appear (おひるごはん、おうどん) so sometimes I’d think I don’t know the word.

edit: i started the どうぶつのおやこ and then regretted it :joy: powered through, but didn’t bother looking up the vocab i didn’t know for the speech bubble conversations. i just used it to learn more animals instead.

March 3

Overall Day 1 Notes
  • So far かばくん いま なんじ is my favorite. What a cute little hippo!

  • Added どうぶつのおやこ - looked up a bunch of words, which really slowed me down. Maybe I shouldn’t do that so much moving forward. I feel your pain @rawrdinosaur!

  • Added しんかんせん だいしゅうごう!- wasn’t as into this one as I’m not super into trains and such. Definitely skimmed more, and didn’t look up as much. Lots of place names that could be interesting to look at on a map. Was nice to see some repetition in words from previous books (くっついた).

  • Added おつきさまのかぞえうた - had to look up a fair amount of things, but I did enjoy the artwork. There were a couple of words that I couldn’t find meanings for: ムクムク and キラリ.

  • にこにこばあ was a nice change after the last couple. Not much text, and most of it was onomatopoeia. I especially liked learning こちょこちょ

  • I always love the children’s books that have baby chicks in them, so たまごがあるよ was right up my alley. There were a couple of verb things that tripped me up at first, but I think I got it (any corrections would be much appreciated). Basically, VERB + てみる = “try VERBing” and then having the sentence-ending verb end in the TE form (みて)makes it like a command.

Day 2

Overall Day 2 Notes
  • Couldn’t really find a translation for うるうる that made sense. If I’m going off context, maybe it’s something like “tada!” or rummaging around in a hat? or building suspense? Not sure.
  • モイモイとキーリー was fun to read - nice abstract images to represent those sounds.
  • Of this batch, たべもの へんしーん is so far my favorite. I love the repetition and learned some fun words.

My favourite word that I learned from that book :joy:

I think the difference is transitivity?
あたたまる to warm oneself / to be warmed (by something)
あたためる to warm (something)

Also, we’ve learned at least 50 words each, hurrah! But yeah, probably won’t look things up as much. (or, hopefully there will be less to look up? I don’t like missing things :joy:)

Yeah that makes sense!
With Kaba-kun, it’s talking about taking a bath and warming themselves up (あたたまる) whereas in the animal one, it’s talking about warming up their body (からだをあたためる).

I think these first couple of books have a lot of words, but the others may not have as many. It’ll probably even out! I also don’t like missing things, so it’s hard for me to not look up stuff as I go :joy:.

There’s this word: しゅうごう
And then I’m guessing the だい is just 大.

There sure was a lot of text in that book! Quite a shock when I opened it up!

Yeah, so I wonder if the translation would be something like… “big gathering”, so a… “big gathering of Shinkansen”. Thoughts?

And yeah, was definitely a shock for me too. And since I don’t know a lot of geography / city names, was at times hard to parse if a word was referring to a location or something else. x__x

Yeah, that’s basically the idea that I had, although I wasn’t going to bother trying to come up with a nice sounding translation.

Yeah, it’s taken from the word しゅうごう【集合】which means gathering and the だい means a big gathering (of bullet trains). Mr. Goja verified this when I whined at how I couldn’t even read the cover.

This was an especially tough read! Lol.

Yeah, we may be in for a wiiiild ride! But at least we’re all doing it together!!

Lol this is not something I learned from that book :joy: :joy:

Thanks for sharing this resource! I can’t wait to start.

Weee count me in! I feel like I won’t be able to finish all 76 books in one month (even if they are for… children) but I’ll do my best haha.

Thanks for this idea @nbeck0212! I’m happy to have all of you along for the ride :sparkles:
