[2025] 多読/extensive reading challenge

Agreed, removing it really just makes sense.

I feel like wanikani could have the most obscure word ever to exist and there would be people against removing it. But once it’s removed no one is gonna come on here and say “dang I wish they had that word” lol.

“What, you guys don’t have 孑孑 and 贖う? Tool is unusable, -2/10”

Maybe if they did I wouldn’t always be trying to remember if this was one was あがなう or つぐなう

I can now literally never reach fluency because of wanikani

Someone needs to make a core 100K Anki deck. It’s the only way.

And let’s make sure it has alternate forms. If you only learn 腹 and not 肚, you’re really only learning 50 percent of the word. That’s like memorizing “stom” rather than “stomach”!

Also 略字. Otherwise you’ll be incapable of reading native handwriting. How could you call yourself fluent then?

Yeah that’s like skipping 変体仮名 and saying you learned 仮名 just because you learned katakana and hiragana. Like imagine if a Japanese person just skipped capital letters and only learned lower case letters of the alphabet and said they were fluent. You gotta learn them all!

I got one of those especially good serendipitous moments of reinforcement from this after not bothering to look up the one of these I didn’t know and then picking what to read for the evening…

No thanks to Wanikani!!!

Haha I really like it when the universe fixes these things for us :joy_cat:

So far this year I’ve read:

  1. 薬屋のひとりごと 2
  2. ミニスカ宇宙海賊 1
  3. ユージニア
  4. 本好きの下克上 6

and now I’m reading 本好きの下克上 7.

薬屋のひとりごと 2 was similar in reading experience to the first one. I enjoyed it a lot.

ミニスカ宇宙海賊 1 was fine. :person_shrugging:

I found ユージニア delightful. The structure, the layers, the characters, the mysteries, how it left me thinking for weeks afterward and even just today sent me searching for other people’s 考察. (Vague spoiler-ish for the ending-ish: I was shocked when the first one said with confidence that THAT person plotted the poisoning, but then the next three people said they thought it was THIS person, which I thought too, but then the fifth person went with THAT person, and also there were several people who refused to even guess. :joy: I definitely want to read something more by this author.

本好きの下克上 remains a good time. :+1:

As expected, I have dropped all manga reading now that I’m doing full free choice with novels. If I had more time/energy, manga!

However, I’m still doing read-alouds, and two of those are manga (ハイキュー and ミステリと言う勿れ). The third is the first volume of 伯爵と妖精, which is getting very exciting. :eyes: I didn’t realize we were going to keep reading after this one, and now I’m all excited about that, too!! :heartpulse::books::heartpulse: (EXCEPT NO PRESSURE, @rodan.) (I would joke that @Naphthalene should pop in and join us except I have no doubt our reading speed would be like ベンノ trying to walk without picking up マイン.)

Oh by the way, after one year of wait, I finally got volumes 1-12 of 7SEEDS from the library. I then went on and read completely unrelated stuff for nearly two weeks (the time I can keep it). Now I have to read all of that over a busy weekend before I need to return them :joy:

That certainly seem motivational!

I loved it too, and will definitely seek out more 恩田陸 books! The other day I happened upon a reddit discussion about the translated book by accident, and I was shocked by the total confusion of the posters. I mean, it definitely left several things vague, but in the book club we had even discussed how several things that were left vague in the original were spelled out in the translation, and how it took away much of the atmosphere and mystery. Apparently not. :joy:

I don’t know about that. I think both of you are pretty experienced. But aren’t we in, like, completely incompatible time zones?

I belatedly finished ハルタ 100号 from December!

I approached the landmark with some fanfare leading up to it, but for some reason (too much other stuff going on?) ended up dawdling on actually reading through it (101 comes out in less than a week). I enjoyed it though! There’s a ~100-200 anniversary special included with 4-page bonus comics and illustrations from various Harta series artists, which serves as a bunch of fun little side episodes sort of like a big pack version of when manga volumes have bonus comics at the end.

There weren’t any 新連載 but there were two endings: 希釈王 was one of my favorite 新連載 from when I started reading for how odd it was, with a unique style that I mostly like a lot, and while ending so soon (and strangely violently) I think leaves it more in “weird scattered interesting thing” territory than something fully cohesive, I’m glad it’s getting a collected volume this month and would recommend it if you want a very unusual take on a world where fantasy races coexist. I definitely hope to see a future series from the author, 須川佳!
(the other ending is FOOLPROOF, but I confess that one wasn’t a favorite of mine – I’m sure it would be someone else’s though and I’m again glad that it’s fully collected this month)

I don’t usually give the 八咫烏杯 rookie contest winners as much attention as they deserve, but I quite liked 蓮守 by 太田シズトキ about a clan protecting lotus flowers that grant immortality.

The main thing though I gotta pitch here though (like I did in the bookwalker freebie thread), is the works of my favorite discovery from Harta, 田沼朝, got collected at last! (I had been waiting for that to happen so I could push them for a long time…)
The shorts collection includes, entirely readable in the preview on bookwalker (!), the first one of theirs I read that I liked so much I translated it to share with friends who couldn’t read Japanese! As well as ones I haven’t read that I look forward to reading once I get the physical edition but I’m waiting to order since I wanna get 希釈王 too, along with 司書正 (which I’d also recommend) as a sentimental batch of new series I liked encountering this way.

And I still really really like いやはや熱海くん’s whole laid-back thing.
The installment of that this issue is a collection of three 4 page comics, and I can’t help but try getting away with pasting one of those 4-pagers here, because I think it’s a really good illustration of the like… very mundane, but warm (and very Kansai) dialogue rhythm and atmosphere of the series? Better than I could hope to describe in words, at least.
I could see it coming across as 100% not interesting, but if it does seem interesting to you, ぜひ, check out the tanko and/or those shorts.

excerpt from いやはや熱海くん

context: 熱海あたみくん is hanging out more frequently at 足立あだちさん’s house, with the latter’s mom and sister also being in the scene.

It’s good to have a release for that “I really like this and want to share it but it isn’t collected yet, and no one’s gonna start reading a whole magazine off a single vague recommendation!” feeling at last!
I do hope that future new series replace it in the future though…

I noticed Harta’s twitter account posted a pretty cute version of I think the whole first chapter of ホテル・メッツァぺウラへようこそ with voice acting. It’s sweet!

Yeah, we read in the evenings, so it would be midday on a weekday for you, I think. You’re just who pops into mind when I think of both 伯爵と妖精 and 本好きの下克上.

Finished the third 本好き arc today and have a question for people that have finished the fourth one :flushed:

Spoilery things

Just to clarify, I’m talking about books 8 - 12. Didn’t want to mention where an arc ends in case someone doesn’t want to know.
Bit of a preamble to why I’m asking:
To me it sometimes feels like 本好き is following this “Nothing much unexpected happens until the end of an arc” pattern, which worked out alright for books 1-3 and 4-7 because they were relatively short, and in between the second arc the thing with シキコーザ happened as set up for the end. The third arc in comparison felt like it was really dragging its feet at times, especially with it being the longest one so far. The last book changed up the pacing a bit as always, but that as well felt more like a set up for something bigger yet to come. I still enjoyed it, but I don’t think I can go on another 8 books without any excitement :see_no_evil:
I do still plan on reading it, but if they pacing is more like the third arc and less like the second, I think I’ll need to switch series for a while to fully enjoy it.
So, as to why I need your help… Do I keep going or take a break? :flushed:
