[2022] 多読/extensive reading challenge

After reading a bit of monogatari, its actually not as difficult as I had expected. On one hand thats cool that its not hard, on the other hand that was part of the reason I wanted to read it in the first place. I kinda wish I was more into fantasy stuff because there seems to be plenty of harder reads on that end, but maa shouganai.

Looking for other stuff to read and I came across something especially tempting…

Maybe I’ll just give some more yuri books a read. I’m sure Ditto would approve

But so anyway what great yuri have we read in the last year or so though

Haha wow, I can’t even imagine how one would find where it came from just from what I wrote. Good job!

Sadly, I haven’t read any Yuri ever, so I can’t really comment further. :upside_down_face:
Well, technically I did read a manga a few years ago that would count? The main character has a magical sufficiently advanced technology-cal gender swap MtF, so it ends up being two women

I haven’t fully read all of them myself yet(i.e. I’m only partway through some of them) but here’s a list of yuri light novels and books I’ve read at least a little bit of that seem worth mentioning split by genre:

Slice of life with eventual slow burn romance: 安達としまむら(I personally really really like this and read the whole thing in about a week but I know some people think it’s way too slow or that one of the two mcs is too insecure or that the other one is too depressed and uncaring)
If you like time loops: 忘れえぬ魔女の物語
Sci-fi horror: 裏世界ピクニック
Isekai: 私の推しは悪役令嬢 and 転生王女と天才令嬢の魔法革命
Also isekai but from a different perspective: 処刑少女の生きる道*
Comedy/harem: わたしが恋人になれるわけないじゃん、ムリムリ! (※ムリじゃなかった!?)*
Whatever this is(kind of surrealistic at least): 少女妄想中

And there’s obviously also the Sayaka spin-off light novels for people who have read Bloom into you since they(in particular the last one) actually give her a decent ending. And there’s also some other books I haven’t read yet but I obviously can’t say anything about those.

*Books I marked with this asterisk thing have noticeably worse prose than the rest

For manga I liked ささやくように恋を唄う, まちカドまぞく was nice (though it’s mainly not about yuri stuff but there’s a literal ton of subtext and it’s still good aside from that too), and… I guess those two are the only ones that stood out enough to immediately come to mind exactly this very moment.

Oh, I got that one in my BookLive recommendations, and the title made me slightly curious.

That being said, I usually do not pay any mind to my recommendations as I got stuff like something something エロゲー 異世界 転生 or some such. (I’m not going to look the actual title up; I just remember it got recommended to me recently because of ポーション頼み)
but if 裏世界ピクニック has your seal of approval, I’ll check it out

徒然日和 was cute, and I’d recommend it mostly because it’s short (3 volumes). It’s very light on actual yuri, but it is there. And it’s pretty funny too. I think that’s the only yuri manga I can recommend (besides やがて君になる of course).

Thanks!
I’ve watched a few episodes of the 裏世界ピクニック anime! It’s kinda fun. It’s funny to me that it’s based on a Russian novel.

When I searched 安達としまむら on kinokuniya, the first result was 忘れえぬ魔女の物語.

What! Пикник на обочине? Need to check this anime.

Assuming that’s the book google says it is, then yeah, the author of 裏世界ピクニック claims to have been hugely inspired by it.

I finished the second book in the 魔女の宅急便 series yesterday. Over a month after my last one but I actually only spent a week reading it. The rest of my time was focussed on other projects.

Usual stats 📊

Total time spent = 14.9 hours
Audiobook length (for comparison) = 7.9 hours
Speed vs audiobook = 0.53
Speed for last book read (魔女の宅急便(1)) = 0.46

Didn’t make as much progress on reading speed throughout the book as a I did last time but still improving, so I’m happy with that. I’m hoping to be at, maybe, 0.75 x audiobook speed by the end of the series. :crossed_fingers:

Book review (no spoilers) 📖

I thought the story would get kind of tired after the first book because I imagined it would be more of the same. And the content and narrative structure was largely the same but I didn’t get bored with it. Maybe I have a soft spot for coming of age stories but it’s just so charming. There’s some more mature themes introduced in this book (minor spoilers) (depression, death) which aren’t super heavy (it’s still a children’s book after all) but I thought were interesting to explore.

I have started reading 魔女の宅急便(3)as my next book. Kind of exciting to watch Kiki age. I wonder when she’ll reach my age (if ever).

Oh just to be clear, because I don’t want you to be disappointed, it isn’t an adaptation of Roadside Picnic. It’s just inspired by it. Different characters, different situation, etc.

In an especially cool coincidence, I spent the evening playing Digital Devil Story, and then happened to see a youtube channel I follow that posts obscure records uploaded… an extended Digital Devil Story themed album???

I don’t have an update since I’m in the middle of multiple things, but I’m enjoying myself, and also Book Walker really heavily roped me in with coins so now I have a lot of ebooks.

Thank you for using the English title, I completely didn’t realize I actually know the Russian novel you were talking about :stuck_out_tongue:
Yuri element was misleading :stuck_out_tongue:
I didn’t read it, but I’ve heard a lot about the plot (and saw Tarkovsky’s adaptation, but it was meh).
I did read Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel (apparently also known as Inspector Glebsky’s Puzzle) by Strugatsky brothers, though, and it was nice.

Also thank you @Ditto20 for your list, bookmarked.

I caved in finally and used my credit card for the first time (only used apple id before), since I got too excited about reading manga, and the coinback campaign was too good. This is probably a slippery slope. RIP my wallet. Oh well, at least I’m starting a new job next month…

I was surprised it’s been letting me get +50% coins on most things, even on purchases made with coins.
What was originally a generous treat to myself for passing my savings goal thanks to an unexpected bonus and stimulus became a Zeno’s paradox style cascading coin parade doubling what was already way too many ebooks.
I guess in retrospect I shouldn’t be surprised a digital storefront might do that kind of thing when I’ve already proved more than susceptible to Steam’s similar tricks…

I’ve been on BW for quite some time and I can’t remember seeing so many things with COIN UP. It could be that I haven’t really payed attention to those, but I think it’s pretty rare. Tried searching for some campaign announcement, but there’s just too many to find the right one :stuck_out_tongue:. Current coinback seems to run until tomorrow the 24th, so do your remaining purchases before that, if you have any .

It does seem like they could do a better job signaling exactly why those modifiers are happening. I thought maybe I was getting away with a “first transaction” promotion on multiple transactions somehow, since that’s what came up when I googled around for +50% coins!
I guess I just coincidentally joined at the right time for almost the entire store to basically be half off. Lucky me I guess!
Now if only they had stuff from Naoki Urasawa or Go Nagai my “oh yeah I’d be curious to read that but don’t want to /can’t track down a full physical set” manga list would REALLY be sorted…

Yes, they do have a 50% coinback on everything right now, it seems. That’s pretty rare indeed, they only do it about once or twice a year. But sales (usually 30-45%) on select few items are frequent, like each week or so, I guess…
My strategy is to have all interesting books in the check list, so I can see automatically if there are any discounted books in there, and which they are.
