[2022] 多読/extensive reading challenge

I will have to try this one at some point! If that guy was neither ツン nor デレ, what word would you use to describe him instead?

(ahem also what are you reading next)

He is very good at separating his work and private life. At work, he is at the very top and the main character at the very bottom, so he is pretty cold and distant. In private, well, they are 婚約者 and he obviously likes her, so he is pretty warm and affectionate.
 I mean, I guess that would be some sort of ツン and デレ now that I think about it, but not the regular usage of the word.

Hm what am I reading next indeed. I just finished the preview for volume 2, but I (again) do not want to buy more stuff at the moment…

Not as much as the one with 魔法少女 theme, but yes :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I got interested in ハウス after your post, and yesterday I finally watched it. It was certainly an interesting experience and the special effects were adorable and hilarious :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh, nice! I’m glad to hear it! That’s a movie that I think can safely promise at a minimum an interesting experience… I think a lot of haunted house stories could be improved by the addition of someone who’s really good at kung fu and has their own music cue for kicking things.

Finished 伯爵と妖精 3! I enjoyed it very much. <3

Also, I liked this bit of the author’s note (even though I usually skip those):

An A+ description of 伯爵と妖精 from what I’ve seen so far.

You still working through 私の推しは悪役令嬢 or have you pretty much given up at this point?

Just now finished my last bit of reading for the motivational checkboxes. When catching up with book club stuff, I always feel like 容疑者Xの献身 takes longer, and then I remember it takes longer since we read a lot more per week, duh. This last push on book club manga reading means I have a week or two (or three if clubs take breaks) to work on 暁のヨナ and whatever else I want.

@seanblue I read some more of it before I started this last book, and it’s changing in a direction I’ll maybe like? I’m not giving up on it, is my status.

@Naphthalene Right? Somehow it’s perfect for the series, too. Makes sense, since she wrote it.

I actually caved in and bought the second volume, which I just finished.
Hmmm, it’s still a fun read, but the pace has really slowed down a lot compared to the first volume. In that sense, it kinda reminds me of ビブリア.
I guess I’ll keep reading eventually, but I’m also not in any hurry to read ten more volumes of virtually no progress on the romance front. (Not that I know what will happen, but somehow I have a feeling…)

So romance, but slow :eyes: ?

Yes. It can be frustrating at times. On the other hand, if they get together, the story is basically over, so I guess it can’t happen (otherwise there wouldn’t be any further volume).

Not sure if I’m just in a slump or what but I’ve had a really hard time focusing on reading for the last two weeks. Decided to cut my daily reading for 雷の季節の終わりに down to 8 pages per day, which feels pretty bad since it’s a lot slower than I’ve read anything for a little while now…BUT once I adjusted my pace I was able to get back to reading it and even went a bit beyond the cutoff point, so maybe I shouldn’t be worrying.

@Naphthalene I know in the past you said that 本好き will likely have between 30 and 35 volumes total, but I’m curious why you gave such a wide range. Shouldn’t it be fairly obvious how many volumes were only published online (so far) given the prologues and epilogues are always narrated by someone other than マイン? I can’t check myself because I obviously don’t want to accidentally see spoilers, but it would be helpful to me to roughly know when the last volume will be published, so I can plan out how quickly I want to read the series. Any chance you could check online again to get a tighter estimate for the total number of volumes?

Just saw 薬屋のひとりごと (1st volume) priced¥99 for Kindle/Bookwalker.

Nope, because, for the most part, those chapters were added for the published version. The author also rewrote some parts and added content, especially to avoid unresolved plot lines or contradictions. For that reason, the number of previously published chapters per book also varies a lot.

Even the prologues and epilogues? Not just the two random side story chapters? :scream:

Ah, I see. That makes sense! This is even more reason to not catch up though. I’d much rather keep reading the high-quality, well-edited version!

Quick math:

  • If I average 3 weeks per book with no breaks, I’ll catch up with book 31, after 72 weeks (around August 2022). For some reason I thought I’d catch up sooner, which is why I insisted on more breaks. But it’s actually not as bad as I thought.
  • If I average 2 weeks per book with no breaks, I’ll catch up with book 29, after 44 weeks (around February 2022). This one is unlikely though, because even if I can average reading a book within two weeks (I did for book 7, but did very little else the whole time), I’m still likely to take breaks from time to time. Though who knows how my reading speed will improve over the next year, or what else I might get interested in.

I really do need to find another series that keeps my interest though. If 90% of what I read for the next year and a half is 本好き, I think I’ll be in trouble once I finish the series, with high risk of getting in a rut. Where are all the fantasy or sci-fi series that aren’t light novels with obnoxious male leads?

Fun fact, a lot of those were already published online, in a separate “folder”. I did not check carefully, but I think some of the epilogues and prologues might have been upgraded from there too. A few were already in the main story, but those were just a handful.
Basically, the online version was not written with publishing constraints in mind. :stuck_out_tongue:

While I have read a few things that I like, nothing really caught my interest like 本好き, so I’m also open to suggestions.
(Technically 薬屋のひとりごと did, but it’s neither fantasy nor sci-fi)

I’d be open to something other than fantasy and sci-fi potentially. That’s just what I typically read in English. 薬屋のひとりごと is a historical setting, right? Not sure how I’d feel about that, if that’s the case.

Kinda. It is set in something inspired by the Qing dynasty (at least, from a technological point of view), but with Edo period elements mixed in because why not. So, not a real country (or even civilization) but still with a 18th century vibe.

Mm, yeah, probably not for me.
