Is there any kind of convention how to underline vertical text in Japanese (with a pencil)? Right side, left side? Circle it? Or can you even call it underlining then .
it’s called 傍線 or サイドライン
mainly on the right side!
In addition to what yukinet posted, I also came across this page 圏点 - Wikipedia
Though I’m not really sure about the differences between those dots and "under"lining. It just says “類似の機能を持った表記方法として傍線がある” which as far as I understand means it’s used similarly (but not exactly the same way?)
I believe the difference is you see 圏点 in actual books to add emphasis, but you don’t really see 傍線 in prose.
Oof, kinda reaching my saturation point with くま クマ 熊 ベアー.
There’s just too much cake making in there. Parts about re-inventing food were also my least favorite in 本好き…
Overall, it’s also frustrating that the main character tends to not do much and preserve the status quo by hiding all the crazy creatures she is one-punching. It does make sense based on her established personality (引きこもり), but it also makes the story kinda static. Also she doesn’t care at all about romance, which means I’m also not getting anything satisfying on that front.
That being said, I’m almost done with volume 7, which would me 10th book this year (counting light novels). Maybe the problem is that I should just slow down a bit
Today I finished listening to an audiobook, first of twelve for my goal for the year. I purposefully chose one I didn’t think I’d like very much (because my listening comprehension is a fair amount lower than my reading comprehension, and I don’t want to miss stuff for a book I’d really enjoy in print): the first この素晴らしい世界に祝福を. It was okay (…). I don’t plan to listen to more of it, but it got the job done as my first audiobook for 2021.
Today I also finished my first manga volume for 2021! All my reading time has been going to はめふら (now halfway through volume 9), with no time at all going to manga, but tonight I had a 7SEEDS read-aloud session with my friend and we finished a volume, so there we go. It was kind of nice to read something different. But soon I’ll be caught up on はめふら and free to roam the lands of other books.
Speaking of, an urge struck me to read the first 蜘蛛ですが、なにか, and then immediately my brain said, no, you’re going to go back to your library book and to 獣の奏者, you fool. However! It’s 2021, brain, and I already put it here in writing that I can read whatever the flip I want. Yes, I will enjoy ミステリークロック and 獣の奏者 3 when I read them, but that doesn’t mean I have to read them now! They will wait for me. If I want to make poor choices and start another light novel series when I’m already mired in too many already, well, it’s 2021 and I do what I want. (… So long as it’s in Japanese, self.)
Mmmm…how do I add myself to this table?

And now the rest of the series too
Overall… there are some things about how the premise of the story is done that makes me feel like it’s not super much for me and while it’s not that important I also don’t really like how the mc’s older sister was done, but it did have some decent comedy and the characters were fairly likeable …so overall it was ok, I guess? Not bad, but I don’t really feel like it did anything to stand out much over other stuff either.
In other more or less random news I also read the short story collection エンドブルー a few days ago (since I like both 安達としまむら and やがて君になるand it’s written by the person behind one of them and illustrated by the other) and overall I liked it. Since there’s only two of them the stories are probably closer to novellas length-wise than to normal short stories though.
To be honest I think the thing that stood out the most just was that (minor spoiler) a character actually got cold and wet without catching a cold afterwards! (Though since the narrators in the author’s other books have commented on stuff like how high school students often don’t actually have rooftop access and how some of the hair colours common in anime/manga actually would stand out a lot in real life, I guess they maybe just don’t like certain common tropes).
I think I liked the first story more than the second one though - the first was pretty entertaining, the second was just ok. According to the afterword the characters in the stories originally come from two of the author’s other books, so because of that I kind of ended up buying 少女妄想中(which it turns out also is illustrated by Nakatani Nio, at this rate I wonder if there’s a chance she’ll end up doing the illustrations for future volumes of 安達としまむら as well) and the first volume of クロクロクロック.
You can edit the post yourself, it is a wiki (it’s just veeery long, so you need to scroll past all the tables to find the edit button).
And then you need to find the correct table
(But it’s early in the year so they are not that long yet…)
You can also edit from the top right corner of the post, just click on the orange edit button and then „Edit Wiki“
Ohhhh, cool! Thank you!!
I also just finished the last volume of 狼少年は今日も嘘を重ねる. I liked it overall, though I think there weren’t quite enough consequences for the main character’s lies and the conflicts resolved a bit too easily. Compare to やがて君になる where there was almost a full volume of awkwardness due to issues the characters had. Also, regarding the ending, I think it was fine (especially because Botan is my favorite of the characters), but I was expecting more of a friendship than a relationship ending.
Also, I found the manga harder to read than most manga I’ve read over the last year. A combination of the words used and the way sentences were phrased, I had to look up more and sometimes I had to just keep going because I couldn’t quite make sense of what was being said.
found this in my library today. probably added it a while back when i was looking for free books. 異世界転移したらネコだらけだった。 | ぱげらった | 女性マンガ | Kindleストア | Amazon
it would really like to read the next chapter. it’s great!
I’m now caught up on はめふら, having finished #8 and #9 as my third and fourth books of 2021. I am very much looking forward to the next one.
Beneath the cut are vague spoilers for the series in general, because I am speculating about what I want to happen and thus (with specific things) you can be sure it hasn’t happened in the first nine books, lol.
A few feelings
My hopes (not necessarily based in anything I think will actually happen, just in terms of はめふら hopes and dreams):
- カタリナ is (continually) aware of the fact that a lot of people (within the books) are wondering who she will be with romantically, and, with this awareness, after searching for and examining her own emotions, makes an at least fairly conclusive decision about it, whether this involves choosing a romantic partner or partners or choosing not to have anyone, etc.
- If she ends up with someone(s), I like all her love interests so I don’t really care as long as it’s done well, but probably my list of preference right as this second that might change immediately is: マリア, ジオルド, セザール, メアリ, ニコル, ラファエル, ソラ, キース, アラン, ソフィア. (Is that all of them?? ) A list of favorite characters would probably be very different, but I really like all of them, so I won’t bother writing that one out.
- カタリナ kisses someone of her own volition.
- More ポチ (why does カタリナ keep forgetting about ポチ, omg カタリナ I swear [but I swear with love]).
- More travels!! But also more time in the settings we already know. Fun new characters, but also more time with the characters we already know. I’m pretty happy with the way the series is going in general, so this is one that will probably actually get fulfilled (knocks on wood).
Anyone who has read any of these books (ahem @Naphthalene), what would your hopes be? Also, Naphthalene, I know you’re going for ジオルド, but if you put them in order of preference, what would your list be be?
YES SOMEONE ELSE CAUGHT UP!
Identical level of spoilers
I pretty much agree with all your points (except the order in point 2 ), especially point 3 for the romantic parts and point 4 for the action parts. Also, it would be great if she finally got to study a little bit harder and became an overpowered (or at least regularly powered) dark magic user . Your point 5 basically means that you’d like to have more of everything, which I do agree with too. Sadly, the author’s writing speed seems to be a limiting factor at this point
About order, hm there are technically two more potential love interests but they are more interested in マリア at the moment so I will also exclude them.
I would go ジオルド, マリア, キース, ニコル, ソフィア, メアリ, ソラ, セザール, アラン, ラファエル
That was hard
Comparing our answers, I see we agree on the top two contenders. I put ジオルド first because I feel both bad for him that everyone else is ganging against him and impressed that he still manages to stay ahead. He should lose some points for kissing her without enthusiastic consent, but it’s put in a キャー kind of way, so he gets a pass (i.e., I would find it not tolerable if it wasn’t fiction). マリア on the other hand isn’t assertive enough in that regard.
We do not agree at all on セザール I see. I found him to be an interesting character, but not a great love interest, and if she goes with him, I don’t think his lifestyle (and country) would suit her
Similarly, you put キース pretty low, but I actually like him, although he is getting most of his points from declaring his love interest. On the other hand, I would put ニコル higher in my own ranking due to the fact that カタリナ actually fell under his charm, but he is losing points for being almost decided to never do anything about his feelings (which, under the circumstances, is the right thing to do, but still).
I find メアリ’s plotting a bit scary and actually close to a proper 悪役令嬢, which lowers her in my ranking too.
I wouldn’t mind anyone all the way down to (and including) ソラ, the last three are too weak or impractical as contenders as far as I am concerned.
Thoughts re: Naphthalene thoughts (with more definitive spoilers in this one)
Re: dark magic powers–I could go either way on this! I’d enjoy it if done well, but I also enjoy her accidentally acquiring stuff and then either blithely moving on with her life or having to try to figure out how to use them and wishing she didn’t have to study, lol.
Re: two more potential love interests–oh yeah, I’m not counting them for カタリナ. (If we opened up shipping considerations beyond カタリナ that could also be interesting, but I don’t have any super strong feelings about any other potential pairings so I will hold off. [But not マリア/デューイ, for me.]) I did also consider アン and ラーナ, but the former’s age gap is probably too much (putting all other considerations aside) and the latter seems to have settled into a steady non-pining type of feeling. However, アン does have at least one moment in one of the comic-type interludes where she’s referred to as (if I remember correctly) a dark horse, and honestly I would also be up for カタリナ and アン settling into a domestic and platonic two-person family-type situation, with many friends and adventures. (I don’t actually know how much older she is. I would also like to know how much older セザール is!)
Re: top two contenders–I feel like in-world they’re also the top two contenders, though キース is neck and neck with マリア when he gets more screentime. (Also, it’s ジオルド, right? I haven’t been reading that wrong for nine books, right??)
ジオルド (agreed would be great, and seeing カタリナ fall for him for real would be delightful), マリア (agreed would be great but needs to be more assertive), キース (love him as a character and sometimes ship them but mostly don’t mind them staying with a more siblings vibe), ニコル (admire his resolution to be a good person but it does make it hard to ship them, but I love them together, but also him wooing her for real, she’d just be passing out left and right, lol, not the most practical…), ソフィア (love her but not sure she even wants カタリナ that way), メアリ (I don’t actually think she’s that much more scheming than ジオルド, but definitely has less of an outlet to be assertive in acceptable ways [mostly I just like the idea of both of them chucking everything and moving somewhere else just the two of them]), ソラ (he is very long-suffering but certainly not doing anything about making her see him as something else), セザール (*), アラン (like ニコル trying to be honorable and I like them fine just as friends), ラファエル (last?!! ラファエル is a dark horse! He schemed to get her into her current job to be near her and keep her from marrying… however, notably since then he has mostly been buried under paperwork so I can’t say I have any real hope for this pairing)
(*) セザール–it’s probably mostly that I’ve really enjoyed him in the two most recent books. I like the idea of them keeping bumping into each other on missions (both spy [or whatever] and diplomatic) and falling in love, and if together they could travel around and have hijinks while he furthers his country’s aims in the region. Also while at home she could take up farming in his country and win over all the win-over-able bad guys by having them shampoo kittens or something (again). On the other hand, I would like to know how old he is, and also in terms of life experience (including romantic experience) he is way up on her in a way that would be a power imbalance. Still, if done well (as always), I’d really enjoy it. (Not expecting it to happen, though, really. I feel like our top two and キース are the best bets if there is even any resolution of that kind at all.)
Re: my point 5–you’re correct, I basically just want more! Which is a compliment to these books–there’s plenty not-good I could say about them, but at the end of the day I just want to keep reading (in a way that feels good, not compulsive or self-flagellating, lol) because I enjoy them so much. カタリナ is such a great character and I want to see her have adventures for many books to come. <3
(Please excuse me dumping all my thoughts on you.)
Yes, I was typing fast and I IMEd weird.
Uh, somehow it works on my phone. Well then.
(An actual proper reply will come when I’m not on my phone, most likely tomorrow)
A quick answer… that ended up longer than expected?
Sure, even if she gets overpowered, I’m 100% expecting her to just forget about it or use her powers in completely trivial ways, like when she plays catch with ポチ, technically a terrifying dark familiar.
That’s what she said (or at least the comic bizarro-world version of her said) herself. I did not take it too seriously, though, since the comics are pretty much not canon. While she is indeed shown as interested (in a platonic way?) from one of the segments from her point of view, I really don’t expect anything to come out of it.
When カタリナ goes to school (i.e. is 15), she was supposed to go back to get married as she had reached the ripe old age of 25. Or was it 22? I forget. Anyway ~10 years older.
She has, like, the strongest resistance to his seduction powers among non-family members. She just needs to build it up a little bit more. She’ll be fine.
Hm, for me, their scheming is very different. ジオルド has a legitimate motive (he is, after all, カタリナ’s fiance, and people are trying to prevent him from spending time with her), while メアリ is trying to steal (?) her. For me, that makes the same type of behavior go from neutral-ish to pretty much evil.
True. Still, he got more time with her in the last volume, and that makes me feel he is the most reasonable pick for a “running away” scenario. They can go anywhere and work odd jobs or something. In the case of メアリ, it seems a lot more impractical.
He lacks the political power to be an acceptable pick locally and he doesn’t seem to have the means to go away with her.
That sounds like a thing she would (keep) doing I feel that’s an amazing combo with マリア’s pacifying powers too.
Thank you for your many thoughts! It’s so fun to actually have someone to talk to about this.
Rather than reply to each of your replies, I will blanket-reply that all of my hopes and dreams, including the order of my list, aren’t based on what I think will actually happen. Even if I would love アン and カタリナ living in a remote cottage where カタリナ raises crops and アン manages their day-to-day affairs and they’re platonic life partners (perhaps even edging toward something else with time when they become more even-footed in terms of life and power etc), and even if I would love for ラファエル to make a comeback as a character with more things to do and also make a play for カタリナ’s heart (the one scheming character that the other schemers aren’t as wary of and thus might have an opening?!), well, again, it probably won’t happen and that’s okay. Your list is apparently much more practical and reality-(in-fiction-)based than mine. I was curious about your opinion and really enjoyed reading it, so huzzah.
I have more thoughts re: メアリ but I think we’re just disagreeing a bit, and that’s okay. I’m looking forward to seeing what parts of our hopes come true! I wonder how many volumes will exist in the end.
