「あんまり怖い話は削って、面白い話を入れるというのは、どうだろう。」
“What about cutting out the very scary stories and put in the funny stories?”
などと、二人で話し合いました。

I think のる here is meant to be 載る and the illustrations are the subject of the main clause, not Ludwig.

I did not even know that there was no capitalization for nouns back in the day 
Plus, I like how they use latin definitions for the words, as if that were the most natural thing to do (and probably it was among scholars at that time)…
Yes, I believe it was required for scholarly works to be written in Latin at that time. So other scholars could read it I guess (scholars in other countries also wrote in Latin).
