大きな 山の ごんざ山に、松ぞうじいさんと いうきこりが、まごの とび吉と たった 二人で すんでいました。

In the big mountain of Gonzayama, lumberjack Mr Matsuzouji and his grandson Tobikichi were living

I tried to do a literal translation here… not sure about the たった Just the past of た?

ごんざ山は、この 二人の ほかに だれも すんでいません。

No one besides them was living in Gonzayama

I think it’s 松ぞう + じいさん - that is, he’s Matsuzou-jiisan.

たった = only, merely. (Past tense of… whatever you’re thinking of would be だった.)

I thought about the jisan thing but I was not sure. So… old Matsuzou?

I started to work on this, but got a bit stuck much earlier than I was hoping. In the first sentence of the story, there’s a phrase ごんざ山 and I can’t find a translation anywhere… Is this the name of a place?

So using たった、would it be saying:

… were the only two people living (on the mountain).

Also, what is the function of the と at the end of まごの とび吉と ?

My attempt for the note on きこり

きこり。。。山に 入り、木を 切りだす しごとを する 人。

Translation:

きこり - A person who does the job of cutting trees on the mountain.

Literal:

きこり - On the mountain, tree cutting job doing person.

“And”.

Or “with” if that makes for a smoother translation. “Matsuzou-jiisan, along with his grandson Tobikichi”.

Would this be an appropriate explanation then?

XとYが - X and Y (X, Y being stressed equally)
XがYと - X, along with Y (X being stressed more than Y)

大きな 山の ごんざやまに、松ぞうじいさんと いう きこりが、まごの とび吉と たった 二人で すんでいました。* Translation A lumberjack and his grandson, named Tobikichi, were the only two people living on Great Mt. Gonza.

Here’s how:

• 大きな (おおきな)

* big; large; great​ * adjective = 大きい describes objectively while 大きな includes feeling

  • 松 ぞうじ いさん person who cuts down trees, lumberjack

• と いう

o The「で」particle will allow us to specify the context in which the action is performed. For example, if a person ate a fish, where did he eat it? If a person went to school, by what means did she go? With what will you eat the soup? All of these questions can be answered with the「で」particle

  • すんでいました

inflection of すむ ( 住む)- to live (of humans); to reside; to inhabit; to dwell; to abide
*Te-iru-form. It indicates an action that is ongoing.
*Masu-form. It is the polite form of the verb.
*Ta-form. It indicates the past tense of the verb.

ごんざ山は、この 二人の ほかに だれも すんでいません。Translation As for Mt. Gonza, no one lives on it besides the two people.
No one other than them lives on this mountain (Gonza).

Here’s my work:

  • ほかに adverbial form of（他 other） besides (someX).; in addition to (someX)​

  • だれ Pronoun 1. who ​だあれ is emphatic or inquisitive

  • も too, not

you can make a “no” word by adding the particle も (mo) to a question word and using it in a negative sentence!

By the way… at what time are we changing the date?

And I would recommend to always put the page number before a translation, so it’s easier in the future to know what’s going on

大きな山のごんざ山に、松ぞうじいさんというきりが、まごのとび吉とたった二人ですんでいました。

The old woodcutter Matsuzou lived together with his grandson Tobikichi in the great mountains of Gonzayama.

ごんざ山は、この二人のほかにだれもすんでいません。

No one lives there besides these two.

*きこり… 山に入り、木を切りだすしごとをする人。

A woodcutter is a person who enters mountains and cuts trees for a living

I had to look up some words and I think got the main gist. Especially the ほかにだれも feels weird.

That’s a great question. in 15 min it’s the 18.08 for me, so maybe in 15 min? :man_shrugging: Difficult with all those different timezones

Typical standard is midnight Japan time, I think. It’s almost 9am as I write this…
