Watched another episode of Doraemon and another episode of Pocket Monsters! Pocket Monsters is a little harder but they’re both good practice and good fun.
Hey there! Joining late! I have been listening to three episodes of Nihongo con Teppei a day, which are really manageable ![]()
Plan to do it until the end, unless my listening comprehension magically improves!
Thanks for hosting the challenge, really helps to see everyone trying hard!
Hey welcome to the challenge - listening is like everything else, the more you do it, the easier it becomes!

Still watching two or three episodes of ドラえもん every day. Also I started watching Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure. (It’s pretty great.) I’m having a bit harder time understanding the last couple days—I think I’ve been tired, and maybe the episodes have been a bit more challenging. But even when I don’t understand what’s happening plot-wise, I’m still getting good practice recognizing words and phrases in context.
Also, I started making a list of words I want to add to an SRS. (I use Wanikani daily, but I’d like to set up Anki soon for words I encounter “in the wild”.) If I know I’ve seen and looked up a word multiple times within the last few days, but I can’t remember what it means, I add it to the list.
Just started today- I figure if I don’t start working on my listening soon I’ll get too far ahead on reading and be more frustrated with listening practice. Just listened to the first episode of Japanese with Shun, and only caught a few words here and there. I think I’ll try to do some “hard” practice every day (eg, 5 minutes of Japanese with Shun), and some “easy” practice (one episode of anime with english subtitles).
Good luck to everyone!
I’m fumbling as well a bit recently. Hour long episode, they did an end of the year special when this was originally filmed. One annoying thing for the format of humorous stories if that often enough for the punchline they hinge on one specific line and that line is also often told in the most rough way for impact / getting surrounded by laughter and background noises to muffle it. I specifically wanted kind of challenging practice material so it works but I’ve never really stopped getting at least a little annoyed at missing things in listening. Joining this challenge is at least helping me out to make me keep doing it; my listening has slowly improved anyway doing Japanese study the way I have to now but this is half an experiment to see if really pushing myself through the harder stuff for a couple months irons out the problems I have with higher difficulty listening in any noticeable way.

Count me in on this one! I need to get some more listening practice in, and haven’t been great so far at making this a regular practice, so I’ll join in here for accountability. I’m making a conscious choice to not include anime with English subs, since I watch it daily and have been doing so for years. So instead I’m only going to count a day as “complete” if I have listened to native content without English subtitles (I’ll allow myself Japanese subtitles of course)

I think part of listening is dependent on your knowledge of the language. How certain structures are formed, knowledge of expressions, etc. If your brain has those in mind, it can fill in the blank for words that can be unintelligible or predict what comes next.

I love that each episode has a different ending theme ??? what a fantastic thing for music??? i think i’m gonna (for the moment) give up on understanding everything. part of the fun of listening is that it happens in time. now, i’m definitely gonna go back and rewatch the series to parse out more of the dialogue, but the gist tends to be clear on a first watch, which is kinda crazy to say.
the first time we started saying じゅう all of the time i definitely was like “oh, i know this one!! i took classes!!! it’s 十”. obviously it is not 十 but 銃 lol. also, if i’m understanding the worldbuilding a bit, the more fear of a thing X there is in the world, the more powerful an Xの悪魔 will be? マキマ in episode … two? is like yeah a コーヒーの悪魔 would be weak, but maybe a 車の悪魔 would be stronger (since those are the objects nearest to hand in the scene). goated premise, i love.
デンジ is such a funny protagonist. kinda triangulates Demon Slayer’s 炭治郎 and Jujutsu Kaisen’s 虎杖 悠仁 but then throw in … idk, one of the Jojo’s? or Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes? But I really love the マキマ character, i think for me she’s the real reason to watch, so far.
I want to divide my time between passive (but focused) listening, where I don’t pause and just try to understand whatever, and more active listening where I pause, look up unknown words, etc. Because I still can’t understand much, I want to split them 50:50
