Damn I must be. I swear I looked for tattoo in jisho and this popped up but I must be misremembering

@Belthazar @Akashelia

Yeah I never know what word to use because I wonder whether 入れ墨 only refers to traditional Japanese style tattooing or includes all tattoos! The jisho entry seems to suggest タトゥー is a better choice for all other styles. But ngl I used the kana word because of the Hige Dan song haha

Daily wanikani and Japanese diary streak: 7 weeks :cherry_blossom:

Like I mentioned in today’s diary entry, my friend is visiting Japan this week and staying for nearly 2 weeks! So I’ve removed listening and job hunting off my habit tracking table and I’m just going to prioritize trying to make sure I do Wanikani and my diary every day even while we’re travelling together !! I’m sure it will be super obvious when we start travelling because the diary entries might be just one sentence long, but I’m determined to maintain my streak! Something is always better than nothing :star:

月 Long work day!

MY MIND IS BUSY AND OVERWHELMED :volcano:

昨日と同じで今日は忙しそう。今日中時間がなくて、今速く日記を書く。今日別な学校に行って、夏に日本から出発を準備して、今夜友達と日本語練習にする。やることがたくさんだから、最近ちょっと不安している。でも今朝姉がメンタルヘルスのアプりを薦めて、使って楽しみ!

水 Goodbye meal!

Got my reviews down to 0 today to try and keep them as low as possible during traveling but regardless I still think the count is going to get pretty high welp

木 Planning lots of trips!

Look ups:

  • Originally I wrote 覚えなきゃ instead of 思い出しなきゃ but after running my entry through a translator it seems that while they both mean remember, the former is closer to memorize and the latter is closer to recall

金 Productive but sleepy day!

土 cute friend time !

Congratulations on passing your first job application last week! Hope all is well on that front and the job hunt blues don’t get you too hard. You mentioned seasonal blues in your daily diary as well, so I hope the coming of spring helps with that too!

Longer response than expected on onsens

I was pretty surprised by this too when I lived in Japan. I’ve gone to a few onsens in Kansai area and twice in Tokyo and I’ve always seen that sign that says no tattoos. Thankfully, my tattoos can easily be hidden with a waterproof watch or a skin colored sports/athletic tape on both wrists so I’m able to get away with it.

A quick look up on google shows that there are a number of onsens you can enter around Japan with a tattoo though. Here’s the top result from my search: 30 Tattoo Friendly Onsen in Japan - GaijinPot Travel.

On that note, if you’re really into bathhouses and saunas, I would recommend trying out Korean bathhouses, which are less traditional than Japanese ones and have a lot more to offer. They allow people with tattoos and there are dry, communal areas for men and women where they’re given uniform pajamas to wear and you can enter different kinds of dry saunas with different temperatures, an ice room, a snack area and a sleeping area. They’ll usually have this in different floors so those trying to relax won’t be disturbed by noise or the smell of food. Sometimes there are even karaoke rooms and play areas for kids. And you can stay for 12 hours! So when I was a graduate student exploring different parts of Korea, I would just go to the bathhouse instead of getting a hotel/hostel because it was way cheaper. Sorry! I think I’ve said too much! I didn’t mean for that to become an ad for Korean bathhouses. But just in case you really like bathhouses.

Thanks for the well wishes! I actually got my first rejection last week too and since I’ve only submitted one application so far, that makes the rejection rate…

But it’s still early days! So it hasn’t hit me too hard yet.

As for the coming of spring, I feel that HARD. When I went hiking the other day I kept catching myself lingering in sun beams. I think my body just needs vitamin D and to feel warmed from the outside in. I’m so excited for summer.

Thanks for the info on Korean bathhouses !! That’s super interesting and good to know!

Sorry to hear about the rejection :disappointed_relieved: But it’s good you’re keeping a positive attitude!

It’s time for winter sads to go away. I cannot wait to feel warmed by the sun again. Have you ever used a heated blanket? They feel similar to laying in nice warm sunshine.

Wow! That was a fairly quick rejection… Hang in there!

Silver lining

You got a response and didn’t have to wait long! I’ve had job applications where I never got a response, or it took them extremely long to let me know. At the least, you don’t have to spend more energy waiting and wondering whether they’re still considering your application. Right now, I still have 6 active applications which I applied for between December - February, which have yet to give me a response. Usually by the 1st month of waiting, I’m already mourning and assuming I’ve been rejected, but it really sucks when you don’t get a definite answer. So right now, I’m mourning 4 applications :persevere:

Also, Vitamin D recharge on a hike sounds perfect for lifting your spirit!

@alygator YES I completely 1000% agree with everything you said in the silver lining comment; I applied on Monday and was rejected on Thursday - I think it’s the quickest turn around on an application I’ve ever experienced ! (I’m sure it’ll only get quicker what with AI and ATS screening through resumes with target vocab.) I’m sorry to hear about all those applications you haven’t heard back about. Not getting a response is the worst  I don’t understand why companies can’t just set up an automated email to let people know. Well done for getting so many applications sent off!! I’m going to work on some more today

@hotdogsuplex I’ve never tried a heated blanket no that sounds so niiiiice. Right now I’ve got about 8-10 layers on top of my duvet each night hahaha I feel like the pea in “The Princess and the Pea” story lool

Butterfly names are weird! I took a picture of a butterfly one day via an app that recognizes the kind of animals / plants you take pictures of, and it told me that it was a “petite tortue” (little turtle). Thought that there must but something wrong with the software for sure, to mess up the classification that bad… Nope, that’s just the name of the butterfly apparently Small tortoiseshell - Wikipedia

I did it!! (kinda!) Even while traveling with my friend in Japan, I kept my wanikani and Japanese diary streaks going, albeit doing the bare minimum (sometimes just 10 reviews or 1 sentence a day). I’m traveling again during Golden Week bc family is visiting so it’s reassuring to know I can keep it going. I’ll spend this week getting the reviews back down to low numbers. I bought a copy of Howl’s Moving Castle in Japanese at the Ghibli Park so maybe I’ll give that a glance sometime soon (tho probably it will just go on my bookshelf untouched for months bc I’m a goof lol)

Cursed stressful bonus update talking about 💴 click 4 bad vibes

Returning to work today made me realize how much I have to do before I leave Japan in 4 months. There’s lots of logistical and financial worries wobbling me. I know it will all work out, but it’s hard to figure out what the best moves are and what my priorities should be !! Initially I held the attitude that “these are my last few months in Japan and I’m likely never going to live here again, let alone with all the great friends I have now so I should say yes to every opportunity and live life abundantly!! :sparkles: :revolving_hearts: :sparkles: ”. Buuuuuut haha the more I realize about how expensive / time consuming it is to move (getting rid of everything in my apartment from many years of predecessors + all the various fees etc.), the less attainable that attitude seems. Beyond the fun trips/adventures and things, there were also lots of things I’d have liked to sign up for to challenge myself (like the JLPT or another running event), but they also cost (both money and time!).

My neighbour who is moving out this month recommended that I start the moving out process asap sooo as of this week I’ll start doing that. I’ve already (as of this morning) cancelled one trip I had planned for this summer (the Fuji hike :sob:) to try and save some money. I’ll just have to fill up my last few months with fun things that are cheap and cheerful! On the plus side, maybe that will be good for my Japanese and running since both studying and exercise are free lool

We’re back to tracking listening and job hunting alongside the dailies now since I have another few weeks before I’m traveling again! Let’s goooo

Thunder rumbles far away

A list of cool things:

  • My streak of writing a diary entry in Japanese every day and doing wanikani reviews just hit TEN WEEKS!!! 10 whole weeks!! That’s soooo freaking cool. And I’m only gonna keep on going!
  • I had my end of year work party last Friday and a coworker said I was ペラペラ loool which is absolutely absurd and not true BUT it’s very kind ~ I have leagues and bounds to go in my listening comprehension and my recall of most vocab BUT I think I can say I’m pretty happy with my accent and my ability to be understood in the sentences (albeit simple) that I do say. Gotta celebrate small wins!
  • If anyone remembers from my post last week, I said I had cancelled my plans to hike Fuji with my friends because I can’t afford it …. WELL… turns out I am very easy to convince loool so I’m climbing Fuji !!! The trip will be right before I leave Japan :o I will be poor, but I will be happy. <3

Didn’t manage to get my wanikani reviews down last week so I’ll attempt that at work today. Lots of people have taken the day off so I feel less of the panoptic stare over what I’m doing than usual hahah (hence why I spent the morning planning my Fuji trip and writing this post up). The plan this week mostly hasn’t changed: I’ll keep doing my diary and wanikani daily. While reading all my fav study logs, so many people are mentioning how the spring challenges begin today sooooo it would be cool to attempt to try one of those (either listening or reading). But I’m traveling again at the end of the month so I need to prioritize submitting job applications frequently during this ‘free’ period. Sooo maybe I won’t join any challenges officially but just keep it relaxed and post about it on my page.

It’s finally feeling warm again here <3 Happy Spring y’all !

For today’s, なら - I nearly always use たら as my primary conditional in my writing and speaking (sometimes と) so it’s good to practice other ones (tho I have a hunch my example sentence above isn’t as natural).

(I’d be able to recognize this one reading but couldn’t recall it in production, and definitely not the Tokoro part that comes after a verb

Congratulations on your 日記 streak! Really commendable! Hope I can have a writing streak one day too!

I’m so glad the spreadsheet for job applications is helping! On a related note, just last week I received an invitation to interview from a job application I submitted two months ago! I had already given up on that one so that was a surprise.

I’m also really glad to hear that you’re cancellation to Mt. Fuji got cancelled! I’m sure it’ll be worth it and you can always improve your financial status later. I always think experiences are the best way to spend your money anyhow. Gotta be honest though, I’m slightly jealous!

The 24 sekki banner is 鴻雁北 (wild geese fly north) how freaking cute!

Well y’all —

I did it every day last week so hit 11 weeks and then yesterday (tho I did some wanikani) I didn’t do my diary  I had a veeeeeery bad mental health day so I’m not even annoyed at myself. I’m just glad yesterday is over and today is a new day! Part of why I didn’t was because it was a new week so I ‘had’ to make a new study log post (banner/table etc.) and I didn’t have that energy. I didn’t wanna post just the diary entry which is a bit stupid since it cost me the streak. But hey ho, the world has blessed me by this week’s 24 sekki being cute so I feel like the geese r rooting for me and I’m staying positive. It’s very very rare that the aesthetic maintenance of this study log is a hindrance (because usually it’s a huge motivator) so I’m not gonna blame it too heavily.

Have y’all heard of the “75 hard” challenge ? It’s that thing ppl do on TikTok where they exercise twice a day, drink a gallon of water, abstain from alcohol etc. for 75 days. If you slip up on any of the components, you reset and you’re back to day 1. It’s pretty hardcore and unforgiving aha. In the health world there’s no way I’d ever do this buuuut I’m really wanting to vamp up my Japanese studies. I can feel my Japanese brain getting ”””soft””””. So, I’m feeling the urge to attempt my own “Japanese 75 hard” of sorts. Funnily enough, 11 weeks is 77 days so technically I’ve already completed a “wanikani and Japanese diary 75 hard” which is encouraging.

The things I’d like to do daily:

  • my Japanese diary :pencil2:
  • some reading :books:
  • some listening :ear:
  • some speaking :speech_balloon:

I don’t mind if the speaking is just reading my diary aloud to myself nor do I mind how much reading/listening I do. For now, I won’t track quantity more so just the fact I did it. Crucially wanikani is not on this list !! I’m thankful to have got into quite a good habit of doing wanikani daily but I actually don’t think it’s serving me enough atm, not as much as dedicating my time to other things could. I just don’t feel as though I’ve been studying to maximum efficiency. It’s like I’m putting in the time and tiring myself out when I could be studying smarter, not harder. I only have 4 more months left in Japan and I’m kinda feeling the push to try my best while I’m still here. So we’ll see if reorienting my focus on these other things helps!

The main thing is if I don’t do one day, the count goes back to 0.
Who knows how this will go lool. (It’s kinda funny to time starting this challenge after missing one day but I don’t think they’re related - I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while! Anyway, here goes!)

09/04/24 (Day 1/75)

  • reading - NHK easy news (1 article)
  • listening - Teppei and Noriko (10 mins)
  • speaking - reading aloud diary/article

  • reading - a few lines from 2 mangas

12/04/24 (Day 4/75)

  • writing -

oooh I Like this!!! I am just thinking about writing 75 characters a day for 75 days… not nearly as challenging as your checklist with everything in it, but… maybe fun?

In any case, I hope it helps you get the most out of the next 4 months!

yeeees writing is so fun :> are you thinking of writing by hand or typing?

hmmm good question. Typing is so much faster and easier to copy into langcorrect, and I don’t get distracted trying to remember how to write a kanji (although then I guess I can just write in kana and go back). But there is something a bit more thoughtful about writing by hand that I like. For some reason, I always feel like my thinking is better when I write by hand, in any language.

How about you?

@mitrac Yeah I’m certain I wouldn’t have been able to commit to a writing streak this long if I were writing by hand since typing is sooo much faster and more convenient. I have tried doing the diary entries by hand in the past:

But it was copying out pre-typed up stuff (in the same way I practiced writing by copying lines of the books I read). When I attempt writing completely by hand it’s just sooooo much kana like you say (and then going back and writing the kanji above it). I do see what you mean about the thoughtful component to handwriting tho!

Nice journal!

That’s an interesting idea to hand write something you pre-type. Maybe typing could be my way into this then to make it more realistic, and if I have time I could write by hand. I hadn’t thought of it like that! Thanks!
