Probably…

We’ll just have to improve our reading speed before then, then it’ll be the spring readers problem

I’ll make sure Ditto joins the winter challenge as well and does 50% of the character goal

And I’ll make sure not to be distracted by English books myself :caught_durtling:

Finished! :tada:

Oh god, math ...

Ummm.

4 hours 45 minutes and 159 pages

4 hours 45 minutes and 159 pages!!! My pre-sleep productivity was stronger, but I hung in there til the very end, finishing my last reading session right before my 24 hours was up!

I read

  • ~a chapter of よつばと!12
  • the weekly reading for the ダンジョン飯 club
  • one chapter of ハルタ87
  • one chapter of はなにあらし13
  • 25 pages of 絶叫学級

My main goal was to read in a variety of seasonally-appropriate spots, and I didn’t do great at that, I mostly just read on the couch or in the armchair in my bedroom. But that’s okay! I had good snacks, cozy blankets, and plus there’s always next time.

I am super happy with my progress on 絶叫学級! I’m at least going to finish the first story (14 more pages), then if I decide I don’t like it (I’m on the fence currently) I may put it aside and look for other spooky stories, but either way I’ll feel good about having given it a fair chance after so many years on my to-read shelf.

Thanks for the challenge @taiyousea! It was really fun and inspirational.

Ok, I have a few hours left but I’m calling it here. Have had a headache and had to power through the last section, but I don’t know how much of that is Japanese fatigue and how much is spending another 4 hours straight (with little breaks) looking at the computer reading. Can feel the eyestrain too, heh.

So yes, after getting up and doing my Anki reviews (not too bad looking!)

I read for 4 hours, closely monitoring with a timer to take out every break and make this truly 4 hours of time spent with eyes glued to the screen. My final total is 65,819 characters across 8 hours, for a reading speed of 8227/hour. I sped up over time! In fact my speed today, in contrast to last night’s 7500, would be more like 8955.

I wanted a book near this length to try to finish in one go, but ended up settling for one at about 90k characters (again, this one 私の夫は冷凍庫に眠っている | L28 ), so I didn’t make it all the way, but did read to the 72.5% mark. Going by Natively’s listed 262 pages, that gives me a rough estimate of 190 pages. But for officially tracking here, I’m using characters.

Overall I’m happy because I did in fact beat last time’s total character count, which was my goal. 35k today basically ties the highest amount of reading I’ve ever done in one sitting, but the other was a much easier VN with lots of voice acting so it was far simpler to do.

It helped that thus far I still think the book is very good! And a nice level to blitz through like this. Thanks to @pocketcat for that recommendation.

If anyone could add my time (8 hours) and my characters (65,819) to the total I would really appreciate it, as I want to rest my eyes and also have some things I need to leave right away to go do for a while.

Thank you very much for hosting, it was fun! And wow some of you are so impressive; I hope I can reach that level of reading eventually.

My 24 hours is almost up now. I think I got more pages during the summer challenge but this time’s reading was more difficult. I may squeeze in one more session before calling it a night, but so far I’ve gotten ~2 hours and ~60 pages. Not sure how many characters that is but I could put some numbers together in a little bit. All done at the library today. I had planned to do more after getting home but dad wanted to watch a movie so I haven’t been focused on it. Reading was only in 変な家. The challenge is a fun way to get me to stop being lazy about reading.

Here’s a picture of the lawn at my library, and it looks green, no bright oranges for the autumn.

Results Time!

1:30-2:30 pages 95-129 End of week 4
3:05-4:10 pages 129-159 End of week 5
2 hours 5 minutes, 64 pages, and how many characters?

I did open the book walker app to start reading a little more before writing this but I’m going to call it done for the results. I know we’re not required to do character counts but I was curious and did math.
:four::zero::heavy_multiplication_x::one::two::heavy_division_sign::one::eight_pointed_black_star::nine::two::heavy_equals_sign::abacus:🫨:books:

Based on the screenshot I took of page 150 today while reading, an all text page has ~40 characters vertically in each line and 12 lines on each page. 480 characters in a page. Since not every line goes the entire page I rounded the total down by around 1/6 to get an even ~400 characters if the page is “full” of text. Many pages in this book have blueprints or spacing issues that result in only half of a page having text. I have further rounded down by a 1/3 margin to account for these half pages. ~266 characters in a page or ~250 for a nice even number. This means my reading 64 pages today lead to a total of ~16,000 characters read. That number feels insanely high.

I’ve been a little afraid of approaching visual novels because character counts seem high to me, but if I can read 16,000 in a couple hours and still feel like I could have read more today then my initial reaction to the big number is misleading and thousands of characters actually isn’t that much to get through. I’m still not a great or fast reader but if I can do 8,000 characters in an hour when I’m focused and mostly understand what I’m reading then that feels impressive to me. Good job brain :brain:.

Thanks again @taiyousea for doing these threads. It’s a nice seasonal challenge and it gave me an excuse to visit my downtown library which was nice. I think I’m the last straggler unless I’ve missed people so I’ll edit my results into the tables soon. See everyone when it’s the dark and cold part of the year. :snowflake:

I see a lot of us had this experience! I had fewer pages but the average difficulty was much higher. It’s still progress :raised_hands:

you guys had better come back for winter!!! smh

Couldn’t commit to joining this beforehand because I had more important commitments this weekend and I wanted to keep those my priority, but I did end up accidentally having one of my most productive reading days just because I was trying to catch up on some non-wrestling stuff.

So I don’t know if it’s okay for me to join so late after everyone else’s totals have been added up, but here are my results:

  • フェイクドキュメンタリーQ — 11,119 characters
  • うみねこのなく頃に — 3,157 characters
  • 女装してめんどくさい事になってるネクラとヤンキーの両片想い 第113話 — ??? characters (30 pages)

TOTAL: let’s say 15,000 characters?

According to my Forest app, I spent 5.5 hours reading.

Mostly I was just trying to catch up on the Fake Documentary Q book club, and then I ended up needing to read more Umineko to keep the new flash cards flowing, and then the manga I follow on pixiv just so happened to get a new update, and someone on tumblr asked me what I thought of the new chapter, so I thought I might as well also read that…

No Fiction is one of the more interesting Fake Documentary Q episodes to me, so I was especially interested in that chapter of the book, and it added so much new lore, it basically totally changed my interpretation of the episode, haha. (I rewatched the episode after reading it, so that’s counted in my time, but not in my character count. It’s basically all repeated dialogue from the book anyway…)

With Umineko, I thought I could’ve made a bit more progress than that in the hour I had to spare for the VN, but I got totally bogged down with fun and useful vocabulary about the market price of gold.

No idea what the winter solstice will look like for me. I do want to properly participate in one of these readathons someday…

Great job everyone! I just wanted to pop in to add that this is obviously not part of the 24 hours, but today I read the last ~24k characters and finished the novel I was working on! 90k characters and finishing a whole novel in under 48 hours is definitely the best I’ve done up to now

:maple_leaf: It looks like the final numbers have fully rolled in, so I am declaring the Fall Readathon closed!!

I’m eternally grateful to everyone for joining and keeping me from reading alone. Seeing your thoughts about your books, stories, or series was such a warm way to spend a weekend with the forum community. Even on days when I wasn’t reading, I was still hurrying to the replies every hour to see who was posting updates.

In the Summer Readathon, 16 readers read a total of 2.5k pages and 56k characters over a combined 43 hours. That averaged to an approximate 156 pages, 3.5k characters, and 2hrs 40mins per person. It was our first readathon! Although we were figuring things out as we went, only reading on one day instead of over four, it was so exciting and fun :books:

In this Fall Readathon, everyone came ready with a stack of books!! 33 readers read an insane total of 6.4k pages and 405.3k characters over 160hr 42m. This averages to an approximate 193 pages, 12k characters, and 4hrs 50mins per person :mirror_ball::tada::man_dancing:

The Winter Solstice 24-hour Readathon will be held Saturday, December 21, through Sunday, December 22, with options to defer to Friday or Monday for those whose schedules work better on different days. The solstice itself is on the 21st and will be the shortest day of the year! :sun_behind_large_cloud: Hoping to read with you again ^^

I hope everyone had an amazing post-readathon sleep! See you in December :raised_hands:
