🍁 Fall Equinox 24-hour Readathon

I will be starting very soon! It’s just that every time I sit down I’m all そわそわ and end up thinking there’s something wrong with the spot I chose and going to look for a different spot where I repeat the same process…

Ended up reading the first 30 pages of Major (not quite a full chapter) in 45 minutes this morning before my 24 hours were up.

Final results: (goals post):
カードキャプターさくら ABBC reading: Complete - 7 pages in 15m
Volume 12 名探偵コナン: Complete - 166 pages in 5h 50m
Volume 13 of 名探偵コナン: Read 4 of 10 chapters - 67 pages in 2h 25m
Volume 1 of Major: Read about 3/4 of the first chapter - 30 pages in 45m

Total Pages: 270
Total Time: 9h 15m

Didn’t quite get through everything I wanted to, but still very happy with how this challenge went! My goal for when we do the Winter Readathon will be to improve my pace so I can cover more pages. Necessary preparation for the next few months: Improve my vocabulary so I’m not having to pause to look up as many words!

Good luck and enjoy, to everyone still reading!

Final update
How did it go? I couldn’t have hoped for a better start. Between 6-10 pm I read for 3 hours, 32.5k characters. The next day, however, was a lazy morning. Before getting out of bed, I read for one hour, 8.3k characters. Then my time was occupied with an English book until lunch. After that I read for 2 more hours (and perhaps a bit more?) of Honzuki.

Results
Total time: 6 hours
Total characters: 66.8k
Goals accomplished

Estimate of pages read:
Start 24.7% → End 56.0% = Total 31.3% of the book read
391 pages in the book * 31% = 121 pages

I ended up spending more time reading English book than Japanese :caught_durtling:

Thank you for joining!! It’s always immensely inspiring to see everyone’s reading process and thoughts. Congrats on such a great final result  :tada:

Haha I’ve been having this same nervousness, especially since the winter solstice is only four or so days before a major holiday  But maybe we’ll surprise ourselves

The post-readathon sleep hits so good :sleepy:

The reading stamina that so many of you have is incredible, I could feel my brain going smooth and unthinking at the 5-hour point during both readathons :weary: Amazing job!! :tada:

Consider it done  The time math seems to have gotten tangled in the results table somewhere so I need to recalculate anyway

Progress: 35m / 1h 52m

It’s been a slow morning… I keep starting and stopping bc of life getting in the way of my reading lol. About a third of the way to my goal though!

Reading 極主夫道14

Also, a Japanese question: is 報 the correct counter to use in this situation? Trying to say “Update 1.” Tofugu’s counter guide says 報 can be used for updates, but it seems to have a news nuance (“first report”). Which I guess I am reporting on the very important news of my reading progress :joy: Anyway is there a better counter to use?

Evening Update

(possibly the last one)

:waning_gibbous_moon: home post :maple_leaf:

I ended up taking a very long nap (I think 2 hrs?) to make up for last night’s awfulness. In general, today I felt really だるい and couldn’t handle too much focussed reading, so I ended up doing another short 30-min session of 焼いてるふたり. The story is so light and fluffy it’s a great relaxation read
It makes me crave meat like crazy though lol

I recalculated the numbers :3

Mwahaha :smirk_cat: The current total suggests that the new goal in the next readathon is going to be at least 173.5k!

…N-nyohoho? :eyes: :sweat_drops:

Me and the five other participants who happen to be free on December 21st, rolling up to insanely high numbers to beat:

This is also on a Saturday, so I’d be Monday gang again. Do the equinox and solstice always end up on the same day of the week? I think the summer one was a weekday.

Bedtime update:

Since I had more leeway this evening, I worked on a page of F落第生 which I own physically, and physically tired out my brain. Then read some (much MUCH) easier manga.

Source Pages Time
F落第生 1 1h 14m
レンタルおにいちゃん 13 9m
三ツ星カラーズ 7 11m
スーと鯛ちゃん 7 3m
SubTotal 69 5h 51m

Not adding to the results table yet, because if I wake up early enough tomorrow and can drag myself out of bed, I reckon I could reach a 6th hour before the 24hrs are up. Either way I’ll sort it in the morning.

Not always the same day of the week, it’s usually the 21st but can sometimes go a day either side.

They’re close but usually off-set. Next year looks like this:

Spring equinox: Thursday
Summer solstice: Friday
Fall equinox: Monday
Winter solstice: Sunday

So I think my tactic will just be to hang onto the closest weekend? But maybe we could try a mid-week event sometime :face_with_peeking_eye:

Personally middle of the week would work, it’s easier for me to take a day off from work than a day off from my family

After another 3 hours and 24 minutes of reading, I have now also started and finished その花びらにくちづけを 唇とキスで呟いて, for 52400 more characters read.

Reached two of my goals! I expected to spend more time reading but ended up feeling pretty lazy all day long ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thank you very much @taiyousea for organising this challenge. It’s amazing how big the turnout was this time around! I’m looking forward to the winter solstice, I suspect there’ll be much fewer of us participating though haha

Also congrats to everyone who participated, no matter how much or how little you read!

It is now 22:30 and I’m calling it a close. I won’t be reading anything else for the next 10 minutes, and it’ll likely cut close by the time I’m done with this post anyway.

My 5 and last update for this challenge; My concentration is definitely waning, and has been since the evening started really (I took a small nap around 5pm which helped a little.) so I jumped around a bit to keep my interest fresh and stuck to mostly manga.

What I read: 23 pages of のぼうの城 上 | L30?? in 47 minutes. NANA―ナナ― 1 | L27 in 2 parts, 184 pages over the span of 1h36 total. What was left of https://learnnatively.com/book/3a454b62a4/ ; about half; ~63 pages in 35 minutes. What was left of 鉄腕アトム 1 手塚治虫漫画全集 | L24?? ; about a third, ~44 pages in 45 minutes.

Results!

That makes for a total of 752 pages and 9h1m (541 minutes)! My brain is tired but that was a blast, haha. I’m going to update my results to the board and then I’ll shut down for the day.

I also read 71 pages of the second volume of the konosuba light novels in 1h 30 min, and with that I think I’m done. I’ll do the math for my total stats tomorrow though.
