🍁 Fall Equinox 24-hour Readathon

Because I didn’t know if I would feel up to trying the challenge, I didn’t make any announcement post. But now that I have actually completed it, I wish to add a post with my results.

My 24-hour time frame was Saturday 12:45 to Sunday 12:45.

The “book” I picked was the visual novel 薄桜鬼 真改 風華伝. I’ve been reading it for a while now and picked it for this challenge to make more noticeable progress.

Readathon pick

I can’t give an accurate word or character progress number as I’m reading the physical Switch version. That’s why I tried making a rough guess and got 22’550 characters out of my calculations which I added to the results below.

Explanation behind my logic for the character count

When I look at the bare minimum of one word reactions/comments/responses such as「…」, 「えっ?」,「NNさん」, 「そうですか。」and the like for one text box which span anything between 3 up to 10 characters, I’ll assume a minimum average of 5 characters for one text box to keep it simple.

Whereas the maximum box capacity for each line – 3 lines are the maximum per box – might be 25 characters each, I rarely saw that happening. Usually, it’s about 15 characters for each line if the box is filled with 3 lines, so that would mean an average of 45 characters.

Therefore, I’ll use this average minimum and average maximum and divide it by 2 for the average characters per box → 5+45/2 = 25 characters

I ended up using these presumed 25 characters for my estimation. If I multiply the 902 textboxes by 25, I get 22’550 characters.

Again, this is a very rough estimation since it could be off by several thousands of characters but it’s the only possibility I have without going down a rabbit hole and trying to find more chapter specific numbers online which I don’t fancy doing.

I don’t know if my logic makes sense (wouldn’t be the first time that my math isn’t math-ing) but I hope that this number is acceptable.

:video_game: Final result :open_book:

Time spent reading: 6 hours and 37 minutes
Progress estimate: 5% of chapter 3 → 30-ish% of chapter 3
Textbox count: 902
Character count estimate: 22’550

Thank you very much for organising the Readathon, @taiyousea!

Also, it’s really interesting and inspiring to see everyone’s thoughts, results and progress updates so far. I hope that everyone who isn’t done with the challenge yet keeps having a good time.

+3 hours and 30 minutes later and I’ve done volume 3 (+156 pages)! This one was a lot easier since they used video game terms I’ve apparently absorbed…

I’m feeling a little tired, but I also have to stay up another 12 hours to maintain my schedule, so I’m going to keep reading.

There was a break for milkshakes. Sugar is good fuel or something.

Small progress update:

Finished this at about 53k characters and 3h 20 minutes.

Also read about 15 minutes of シークレットゲームKiller Queen on Switch, but that’s on switch so I have no idea about character count (Maybe it’d make the most sense to just estimate it as somewhere around 3k characters based on my average reading speed for other stuff that’s at a similar difficulty?)

4th reading session done. Time now: 15:45. Remaining: Not quite 7h.

I read the last short story in 虚像の道化師 - 409-475. 66 pages in 1h32m, spent in the sun on the balcony. It was supposed to be rainy today, but that seems to have shifted to tomorrow onwards. :sun_behind_small_cloud:

That’s one manga and 1 partly done novel down! It’s the 3rd or 4th short story collection in the Galileo series I’ve read so far, and while I still prefer 東野圭吾’s long format writing, this was my favorite of the short story collections. The last case in particular I thought was really good! The police’s was much more obviously competent, probably because 湯川 had a very late and minlor showing.

Totals!
Time: 4h54m
Manga 287p, Novel 153p

I’m honestly not sure what I want to read next… It might be a good idea to do something else for a bit.

アンダーグラウンド

16 pages in about 1 hour. Still roughly the same speed.

14 pages in another 50 min.

Almost 2 hours left. Trying to get to :100:

It’s only 0800, but I’m going to call it. My “short break” last night ended up being most of the evening.

This reinforced what I already knew but didn’t want to acknowledge: my kanji and grammar are alright but my vocab is crap and the biggest driver to my reading speed. I think I need to…uhg…crunch vocab.

I’ve also made up my mind to read 本好き2 next, and maybe even finish the arc. Sorry 転スラ but it’s first arc is the easier read.

Final Tally
Time: 6.5 hours
Pages: 69 (45%–>68%)
Characters: 34,212

I’ll update the wiki once I’m on desktop later unless someone wants to do it for me

Was too tired to type this up last night but final stats:
鋼の錬金術師 39 pages, ~2k characters :white_check_mark:
ゆるキャン 167 pages, 12154 characters :white_check_mark:
ヒナのままじゃだめですか 184 pages, 9678 characters :white_check_mark:
氷の魔物の物語 19 pages, 1296 characters
魔女の宅急便 9 pages, 2936 characters

Totals: 418 pages (409 manga 9 book) 28k characters, 5 sources
Timeframe: Saturday 12:55 am - ~7 pm

The character count for 鋼 is an estimation because my mokuro file ran out at page 150 so I had to use the average character count per page to estimate for the remaining 30 pages.

I read 25k characters from manga, and thinking about reading that much from a novel is absurd, but I’m going to challenge myself to do it before the winter solstice readathon.

I enjoyed the comraderie of reading with you all. I’m looking forward to our final numbers, but it’s also making me a bit nervous for our winter solstice goals…

The aftermath:

I’m starting this today which is Sunday. I’m inspired by everyone’s efforts and I will see how much I can read today! I think I’ll start off just logging my time and then recording what I read later. I hurt my back lifting a box so it’s a great excuse to stay in bed or on the couch and read!
I’m also reading ふしぎ駄菓子屋 ! I hear the movie is coming in December!

Ooh, another sweet shop customer! I don’t know if you’re on the Natively forums, but there was a club over there for reading the first volume, and a casual offshoot club for the rest of the volumes where we’ve been discussing stuff. Feel free to join us! :eyes:

Thanks! I’ll check out everyone’s notes! It’s a fun read with a ton of onomatopoeia to learn. I love the elements of magic and the unexpected outcomes.

2 hours and 40 minutes later…volume 4 complete! +161 pages. The plot decided to hit me like a truck in this one, which is helping me stay awake a bit.

I’m getting tired though. But they also stopped at a cliffhanger. I’ll keep reading a bit, but we’ll see how much longer I can squeeze out before my brain gives up. At least I’ve definitely passed all expectations I’ve had for today.

Haha yes, a lot of things got not done during this Readathon :expressionless:

Well done everyone, I love reading all the updates! And keep going Sunday / Monday people!

Dinner time update:

This afternoon I focused on 空の軌跡. I took two breaks while reading, and read ~5k characters in 2h 13m.

SubTotals: 41 pages, 5k characters, 4h14m

I need to read 9 more minutes to beat my summer solstice reading time, which between this evening and potentially tomorrow morning, should be very doable.

I started ケーキ王子の名推理 1 for my challenge.

Read 74 pages in 4.5 hrs. I’m a third of the way through at 32%.

I bought the physical book in Japan but bought the digital recently because I like to highlight and it’s easier to read digital. I love cake so this has been really fun so far. I’m glad it’s been turning out as good as I’d hoped. I read the manga version of this first volume a couple years ago but the art didn’t do the characterization as well as I’d like. Hayato the MMC is way more ikemen in the book than the manga I’m so surprised :joy:

As expected, I participated on Friday. My train journey was a bit rougher than expected (due to floodings in Austria), and I was very tired and needed to doze every now and then (due to getting up super early and going to bed pretty late the night before :flushed:) and so I didn’t manage to read as much as I had hoped, but still. First I read that week‘s assignment of 点と線 (52 pages) and then I started this week‘s reading of 変な家 (7 pages) before running out of time. So I did not manage to address my book backlog but I was at least able to keep the current book clubs in check, which I think is a win as well

I am about to start reading for my 24-hour period. I’m going to try to catch up with the :hibiscus: Flowers VN, I am hoping to finish chapter 6 during the day!

+44 pages +35 minutes later…I can’t bring myself to look up words anymore. I think I’m done. I should wake up after my 24 hours are done, but I’ll add my final totals and everything after a good sleep.

アンダーグラウンド, 12 pages in 40 min

About 20 min left in the day, but me reading 1 more story in アンダーグラウンド wouldn’t make it in time, and I don’t want to read half story.

Total: 83 pages out of planned 100. but 170 manga pages divided by 10 (= +17) may be too harsh…

8 hours, 4 of which was for manga.

I know the feeling of dreading the crunch, so to make it at least a little easier I recommend using/making a deck on jpdb for what you’re currently reading, in this case 本好き. That way you learn vocab you‘ll actually use and it feels just a little less like a slog.

Yeah I’m a patron for jpdb, but I also have renshuu pro and I think that’s going to win out.

Renshuu has listening and writing, and the text analyzer is getting an update. Frequency-within-passage filters are currently in work, I’d expect them in the next month or two. It already has the option to filter by overall frequency and other filters so I can tailor decks to my liking. It doesn’t do names or fantasy words well though since they’re not in its dictionary.

The problem is while both allow import of wk, there’s no good way to cross with each other (or platforms like koohi) so for my sanity I need to pick one resource.
