Third panel of page 77 includes a fun quirk of how the Japanese culture shapes the Japanese language. Yotsuba tells Fuuka おあがりたまえ (probably more commonly seen in media as おあがりください) - あがり here is the verb 上がる in stem form.

See, in western culture, the boundary between the outside of the house and the inside of the house is at the front door - to invite someone to enter the house, you invite them inside the door, and so in English we say “please come **in** ”.

In Japan, however, or more specifically in Japanese-style houses, the genkan, the entryway, is still considered the outside of the house - the boundary is not at the door, but rather at the step up to the wooden floor. Thus to invite someone to enter the house, you invite them up to the raised wooden floor, and so in Japanese, they say "please come **up** ’. Or in other words, どうぞお上がりください. This phrasing is sufficiently prevalent that it’s also used in Western-style houses in Japan, where the door _is_ the boundary of the house.

Yotsuba’s following line, おまかいですが is a slightly mispronounced 細こまかいですが = “even though it’s small”. It’s a fairly standard thing to say when inviting someone in your house, because it’s considered polite in Japanese to humble yourself. An equivalent English saying (in terms of usage rather than meaning) might be “don’t mind the mess”. Mispronouncing or completely garbling common polite phrases is a recurring habit of Yotsuba’s.

You’re still skipping all the handwritten text. You’ll miss details if you do that.

Speaking of the handwritten text.

> **page 87, panel 4**
>
> I’m reading “おちゃわん もうほう”. The first part seems to be rice bowl/tea cup and the second could be も plus うほう, right side (or もう + ほう (direction), but I can’t make sense of that either). Normally I’d assume Yotsuba was saying something garbled or nonsensical, but Fuuka says “お よく しってるね”, which I think is “I know that well”, so it seems like what Yotsuba is saying should make some kind of sense.

It’s page 79 in my edition…

Close. It is actually おちゃわん もつほう. You see the missing stroke above つ.
Meaning “the one with which we hold the rice bowl” because that is the hand holding it and how she remembers from which direction they came ^^

> [@Zeggpold](#):
>
> “I know that well”

In this case “you know that well”. She is praising her. Indicated by context and the ね is also a strong hint

The word えんりょ seems to mean hesitate / hold back and various other similies. According to the vocab sheet it’s being used as ‘hesitate’ or ‘refrain’ The な at the end of the するな makes it negative - I’m assuming it’s a shortened form of ない. So the meaning is ‘don’t hesitate’ I think, which I assume means ‘come in’ as an invitation.

It looks like it can be that way, but the usage and meaning both differ:

- ない (attached to a verb stem) is used to negate something: “didn’t do ~”
- な (after the dictionary form of a verb) is used to prohibit something: “don’t do ~”

Another chapter done. Funny stuff towards the end there. a fun read 🤣

I mean can you imagine trying to explain to a virtual stranger why you’re hanging half way out of their bathroom window when they left the house empty a short while ago?

> そうきたかあ - according to google translate ‘so that’s how it is’ Doesn’t really mean much in context.
> おちゃれんもつほう？(not sure about this - the れ could be something else - google translate gives me nothing for this.
> およくしってるね - You know a lot about it, don’t you? Seems to make sense assuming yotsuba said something about their old place in the one i can’t understand.
> よつばちゃんは （some kanji i can’t read) うまいね - yotsuba is really good at …something. Drawing I assume.
> そーか？ - really?
> ふーかはへただな - fuuka is bad at it
> え？！うぞ！what?? no way!

> **Page 80**
>
> ねちゃった - she fell asleep
> トイレどこかね - Where’s the toilet?

Figured I’d finish off all the handwritten bits on all pages since they’re not in @Dathmach 's comment, and my best understanding of them in case anyone else comes along looking for them, and of course I’m happy to be corrected if any are wrong.

> **Page 83**

> つっかえてうどかなくなっちゃったんです
> I get that she’s saying she’s become stuck and unable to move. But I’m not sure what the ちゃったん bit is / is doing here.I understand (I think) that the たん bit is making it past tense and an explanation / reason, but I can’t figure out what the ちゃ is.

> **Page 87**
>
> Another bit of handwritten:
> やっとぬけた - Finally out (from ぬける - to come out)
> なんでこんな事に - why did this have to happen??
> あさぎ姉ちゃんにはバカにされるし - My sister Asagi made fun of me too. This is from google translate, and makes sense. From what I can see - バカ means things like fool or idiot and される means to do something, so I’m guessing it’s in literal form, something like ‘she’s making a fool of me’

Edit: I’ve seen my page 79 mistake in anopther comment now 🙂

Aha thanks! 〃although trying it i’m only getting this giant thing as an option. If I press space is just inserts the option 3 kanji.

Speaking of that, I’m assuming it just means like an emphasised え sound?

Thanks as always for the explanations! I’m familiar with ~んです。From the final chapter of Genki 1, so figured it was that grammar form.

Ah great thanks. I’m not familiar with passive form yet, I’m guessing I’ll encounter that as I work through Genki 2.

Interesting. It must simply be a difference in how the application’s internal dictionary is populated. For example, Mozc doesn’t resolve まる to ・ although a prior application I’ve used for typing in Japanese did.

I’d say it makes the sound more “rough”, for lack of a better way to explain it.

Yeah, difficult to describe, hehe. I’m reading it like this:

The way the first girls sound.

In general, the full construction of (お／ご)[V-stem]ください is a very formal way of asking someone to do something, a big step up in formality from ～てください. Yotsuba’s just substituted たまえ here, presumably because she got it from Dad, but possibly don’t add that one to your Japanese repertoire. 🙂

I just use the / key for interpuncts.
