hiyaa~ ive never read a whole book in Japanese before and i hope i will this readathon! i read about 10-20 pages of yotsuba but, never finished and it was on a pdf, i plan to actually buy the whole series this time and phyysially read through at least 6 volumes!~
GOAL March 21st
The best I can do is read 10 news articles from the Todaii app (which is considered 10 pages, I suppose) in 2 hours.
(I usually read just once a day, so it is a challenge for me. )
I’ll do my reading on Saturday (the 22nd) so I can have more time to read compared to a weekday. I read visual novels for the past two readathons but I don’t have any I can easily track character count of at the moment, so I’ll do some light novel reading this time instead. I’m not sure I’ll spend as much time reading as I did the last two readathons, so maybe I’ll aim for one light novel volume as my goal?
So
Reading time: Saturday the 22nd in its entirety
Goal: Finish one light novel volume, then read some more if I have the time and feel up for it
Books:
週に一度クラスメイトを買う話3
(maybe something else if I feel like reading more)
I think this time I might try to read as much of JoJo Part 6 as I can. I’d love to finish that Part eventually and last time I tried to read it, it made me feel anxious. Hopefully the readathon can counteract that through its marathon nature
I’ll be joining on the 22nd! Going to prioritize 銀の匙 (the club starts that day!!!)
But I’ll start the day with something easy like 366 or ルックバック before getting into the wall of ag jargon
Goal: Be caught up with current book clubs and finish books I’ve already started. If I somehow get through that (press x to doubt) I’ll start going through my manga backlog, easiest to hardest
@Cathm2
Yep, it’s 春分の日, not to be confused with 秋分の日, or the fall equinox, which is only one long う different in pronunciation.
I learned about it because my coworkers at my old job reminded me not to come to work on those days and when I asked what the holiday was for and what people do, it became a fun office discussion. (spoiler no one does anything lol, unless you’re a Shinto priest or shrine maiden maybe.) The fall equinox sometimes becomes part of silver week if silver week happens. The next one is in 2026
I had a similar interaction with coworkers talking about it recently, over here they said that they usually visited their families graves still for お彼岸 similar to in お盆, but that seemed to be about it (other than eating もち). They were all on the older and slightly more religious side to be fair.
Interesting! If I remember right, my coworkers in that convo were all between 30-45 years old, so an age difference could well account for their answers. Do you know if your coworkers make vegetable mounts for their ancestors for お盆? I don’t think I’ve found anyone under 60 who has/does
Mine were more like 55-65 so there’s almost certainly some generational (and role in the household) divide I guess. I’ll have to ask them about what they do for お盆!
Been going back and forth on what to read for this equinox…
often depends on the mood I’m in …
Should finish 2 books this weekend though off the bingo card before the equinox starts
Looking at the upcoming stuff I can maybe try to get through super quickly (by char count and level)
One of the squares is to reread the first book ever read (which would be 少女終末旅行 1 ) For some silly reason I decided to add - finish the series with that as well) but it only has about 8k char and read it before years ago… should be easy to read the whole vol in one sitting (if I can stand it) [should still be able to get that square though, finishing books 2-6 shouldn’t be too bad by the end of the year]
Another Bingo square is friends rec that’s been sitting 俺が見つけた、コンビニの恋 1 It’s got only about 7100 char so also probably an easy read if in the mood.
Haven’t really ever done a whole vol of manga in a single sitting before (get bored/worn out/etc…same with binging a show…after a few need a break) How people can sit and watch 30 or 40 episodes of something in one sitting over a weekend … that’s not me
Then there are some others that are on my bingo card, but since probably not going to be able to do in one sitting, might start these two books during the event.
拾われ子猫と元ヤクザ 1巻 about 10100 char - cute probably some ksb
骨ドラゴンのマナ娘 1 about 11300 char - found it from someone else on wk a while back but haven’t started it
Of course continue reading the books in progress and cannot neglect the 諸説 .
I’m too lazy to create links for each of these but they are all in natively (and in my library)

May also read some things that aren’t in natively and play some games in Japanese if I get too tired of reading.
As far as overall goals for hours/pages/char don’t really have any other than to do better than last time which should be quite doable barring any unforeseen chaos.
The readathon is one week away! If you made a goals post, please add a link to the participants list in the first reply This is so I can selfishly follow your updates
I’ll be reading the children’s novel ルドルフとイッパイアッテナ | L22?? on the Friday (I work Thursday). Very excited to see how much I can read (probably reading from mid morning to late afternoon with walking/eating breaks)
I’ll join!
It’s nice timing actually, since the equinox date more or less marks two months since I started reading native content. But can’t do Thursday as that is the busiest day at work, instead I’ll take advantage of the proposed alternative, hope that’s okay
Period:
Friday from 2-3PM (once the workday ends) to Saturday 11AM (when the live broadcast of the Milano - San Remo cycling race starts on Eurosport )
Goals:
i normally read 1.5-2h a day, so now I’ll try to double that - 4h at a minimum. But hopefully more, since I won’t be doing any further reading on Saturday afternoon. We shall see…
What:
I started 君の膵臓をたべたい the other day. It’s a difficult one for me, hence not targeting pages/characters count just the time amount.
Well, unless of course in the mean time I get exasperated with it and decide to switch to another book (I’ll update the post if so.)
EDIT-
Decided to jump into another book for the challenge: 私はあなたの記憶のなかに
Also, with a little luck I might be able to start a little earlier than planned, perhaps at 1PM. Still within the deadline of 11AM on Saturday
Is it really okay to do whichever date? I think I will plan on Thursday if so! I work Thursday and Friday, but on Friday I have a (English) book club, so Thursday will probably give me more time to read!!
Goals:
Read for at least two hours
Read a lot of (finish?? after looking at page count, maybe I can get to the middle?) 風立ちぬ
I’ve never done one of the readathons before, so I’m gonna go with a low bar goal of at least two hours, but I’m sure I’ll get more than that!! And as for reading materials, I started 風立ちぬ with the advanced book club, but fell behind. So I’m hoping to be able to make a lot of progress, or finish it! And I also might read some of my current Slam Dunk volume, if I need a break for my brain haha
Looking forward to it, and reading everyone else’s updates!
I’ll join, I think on Thursday, that’s when I’ll have the most time, since I have things to do Saturday. Realistically I think I’d tire myself out if I read in Japanese for too long, so I’ll take that opportunity to read some in Korean as well, just keeping those numbers separate.
Goals:
At least 1 hour of reading in Japanese
Progress on 玉藻の恋
Finish either 뜻밖의 계절 or 소리를 보는 소년
Hello again everyone! Crazy to think that we’re on to the fourth challenge already! This time I will be toning back my goals slightly from what I tried to do the last few times, and have a pretty simple one in mind.
Last month I picked up a set of the 少女革命ウテナ manga at half priced books as a great deal, and for this challenge I want to read all 5 volumes. That’s it, no tricks, no time goals, no crazy novel character counts, no nothing. Just sit down and knock out a short manga series in a day. I do kinda expect to do this pretty easily within the time frame, and will probably look for other stuff after I finish, but if I can at least finish those 5 then I’ll be satisfied
Looking forward to reading with everyone again, but haven’t decided on a date or time to start quite yet. My schedules are wildly unpredictable, but I will carve some time out somewhere
