Readathon GO

Started with スーと鯛ちゃん just to get started. 8p in 3m.

Next is Doraemon, my copy is weird so manual count of the pages read. Also, because I am skipping over the technical bit at the end of the 2nd graded bit. I read the chapters for the 3rd grade section. Was surprised by how much I got into what was happening. Both chapters mean 31 pages in 28m.

Next is ふくよも. We got a new character speaking with kansei dialect (she is practising on purpose) so surprise practice with that. I finished it, so that’s 52 pages, and it took me 30m. Not the most interesting, but nice enough, plus it was free so that doesn’t hurt. Pretty sure I have the second volume and there’s no reason to not read it some other time.

マジで付き合う15分前. Finished it. Didn’t follow the story great, but I finished it. That’s… 63-36 (-2 pages of author note skipped for being too dense) so 25 pages read in 17m.

Decided to start reading the ダンジョン飯 manga because, like, I realised waiting for my reading to get good enough for it makes no sense. Heavily relying on vocab sheet though XD. I didn’t quite have the stamina to read all of the first chapter, but I read 30 pages in 42m which I don’t think is bad at all.

I think it’s about time for a food break.

Apothecary Diaries chapter 4. The word 天女 in the chapter title intrigued me, but I’ve finally figure out who that was refering to. It’s obvious in hindsight. Finishing that chapter takes me to 11 pages in 35m, which isn’t too bad. I shudder to think how slow it would be reading intensively. I’ve essentially met the essence of my apothecary goal even if technically I said one more page. I can always try another chapter in the morning, see if that’s feasible.

Next is F落第生. I cannot turn up the font on this book so they are the realest of pages. I also barely remember what happened last time I read this. I onlt read a few pages. On p22, so I read 8 (more than a “few”) in 45m. Barely understand what’s going on. Only just figured out Shu-chan’s sister is pregnant, not Shu-chan herself. I think I understood the back story bit about how her mother was paying for uni and the prices went up so Shu-chan got a part-time job to not be a burden on her mother. I don’t know who the protagonist is still, but they’re pretty naive to think pregnancy = marriage. But it was nice of them to invite Shu-chan to their house for the school trip so she doesn’t have to pay for the lodging, if that is what has happened.

Despite my brain struggling with the prose in that book, I’ve decided to start アンフィニシュトの書 悲劇の物語に幸せの結末を after a small break, my other physical book. For some reason, the coloured picture pages at the start include romaji for the names of I assume the main characters. Looking at the 目次, each of the chapters is about 50 pages long, so I will not be reading any of those in one sitting. Reading those little bits, maybe counts as 3 pages of text that I did not time.

For an actual small break, switching to しろくまカフェ. 30 pages in 26m.

Now to actually attempt some アンフィニシュトの書. I read the first 2 pages in 14m. The set up of this plot feels very… teenagery, if that makes any sense.

Finishing up with 三ツ星カラーズ, as much as I can before I decide to go bed. Finished the volume. 53 pages in about half hour.

Spent forever procrastinating while writing update post, should’ve gone bed half an hour ago…

I’m awake, with cuppa tea, seems I ran out of breakfast foods yesterday but I’m sure that will have absolutely zero effect on my concentration.

As promised, starting with 空の軌跡. Tallying dialogue boxes as I go for a new reading speed estimate. Right, I’m half hour into this and like, whatever numbers I come up with are just an underestimate of my reading speed, as I keep forgetting to tally boxes and keep getting distracted by dog. Right. 1h 26m, and about 5.8k characters. My reading speed for this has basically doubled from a previous estimate of 1k in half hour to 2k in the same time. Still need to read for another hour at least, but that’s enough 軌跡 for one day.

I attempted to read more F落第生. Since it is just physical book and takoboto on my phone, I tried taking it to the cafe. I haven’t been this early in the morning before, it was packed. It was 10:00 when I sat down to read and 10:45 when I left, so I reckon taking out eating time that’s about 30m to read the 4 pages I got through. Lots of interruptions though. Anyway, my earlier assessment of the plot seems to be wrong. These pages are explaining the sleepover, which is happening before the school trip, which Shu-chan cannot afford to go on.

Switching to Rental Oniichan for an easier read, not binging though, I like this one. EEEEEEE this manga makes me so happyyyyyyyyyy. Good chapter. 33 pages in 11m.

Next is some ひとりぼっちの○○生活. 8 pages in… also 11m? Hmm, that doesn’t seem quite right. Is that really how much more dense this one is in comparison?

Going to attempt the next 薬屋 chapter. I think there was more explaination of how Jinshi looked for Maomao. Though, I feel like I missed the explanation of how Maomao knew the problem? Maybe it’s in a different place compared to the anime. 9 pages in 23m.

My brain is tired, but I’m sure I can read more. 約束のネバーランド, 20 pages in 20m. さよ恋, 34 pages in 25m. 生き残った6人によると, (wtf? was not quite expecting that!!!) 28 pages in 14m. The green yuri one, my brain is so tired I was just looking at 今日 going 「いま...no, こん...じつ?」., 31 pages in 20m (only just finished chapter 1? Surprise).

AAAA I’m done. Brain melting. SLEEPS.

That’s a total of 418 pages and 5.8k characters in 511 minutes (or 8.5 hours for normal people) across 17 sources. Three of which I finished, most things I just read a chapter or two.

I met all but one of my goals. Pretty sure the only reason I read as much as I did because of how the 24 hrs were. If it’d been midnight to midnight, I’d’ve not had the stamina to get through as much. But, it was within the 24 hours so it counts.

It is weird to count a full page of novel text the same as some of the very light manga. I’m finding it interesting to compare the different sources, like レンタル and ○○生活 both were 11 minutes but quite different in page count, or 薬屋 and 約束 where I read 20 pages of both in different amounts of time.

Anyway, I’m happy with this. I like how the readathon gives me motivation to read a lot when I otherwise wouldn’t have.
