Level 53. I am moving along, and the vocabulary backlog is stretching ever further. However, I’m able to complete most vocabulary lessons lightning-fast. Once I finish the kanji on 60, I wonder how long it will take me to work through the long backorder of vocabulary.
I’ve actually just finished day 3 of kanji lessons for 53, which means I’ve gotten through the kanji for this level. There are some I really enjoyed, particularly 葵 (hollyhock) and 莉 (jasmine). Ah, nature words!
I’ve been reading 3-4 articles of varying lengths each day, mostly from NHK, a few from other places. I’m still quite slow and clunky, but I can tell that this is the way to go. I’m improving marginally, and the more I read about a certain topic, the more quickly I can process articles about similar topics in the future. I think the way to move forward is engage, engage, engage with native reading and listening practice. Excited to dive in more deeply after finishing Wanikani, but still prioritizing finishing through level 60 for now. I will say, reading is helping drive in my Anki and Wanikani reviews, and I’m flying through them quickly most days!
Unrelated to studies, I’ve made a little schedule for myself and I’m going to attend this gym and some classes each week. I’m a little nervous. I did an initial lesson to run through all the basic movements, and I’ve never focused on lifting heavy before. But I’m excited to see how it goes and to feel strong
Will be back in a bit for another level up~ and perhaps some movement progress updates~

Ah, I’m dreaming of spring! And finishing Wanikani in the spring ~~
Moving along at a steady pace. No time to think too much or make grand plans, just gotta keep running.
Big accomplishment of the day: I read a fair amount of a Wikipedia article in Japanese, and actually followed what was going on! I’ve been wanting to incorporate browsing Wikipedia into my reading practice, as it’s something I like doing in English, but I’ve had trouble finding articles that grab my attention.
Today one of the top NHK articles was regarding a crime incident that happened in the '90s. I ended up on the Japanese Wikipedia page detailing the incident. It held my interest enough to get through most of the (very long) article (I skipped a bunch of details in the legal proceedings).
Reading that today, encountering legal terms I would never have expected to understand, and almost totally breezing through on Kanji knowledge, I distinctly tasted the fruits of all these years of Wanikani.

It’s time to level up. Level 55? I can’t really believe it. I must keep pace. Looking forward to the flood of vocab lessons I’m going to experience on level 60, I think they will be a bit of a mental breather. Such frequent kanji lessons are difficult!
Unrelated to studying, I just did the most shocking upper body workout and my arms are like two dead fish. It is a miracle I am typing. But I had fun and am excited to get strong
Related to studying, I think reading articles every day has been doing wonders. I spent about 2-2.5 hours today reading different articles, I believe, both on NHK and Wikipedia. My reading speed is noticeably increasing, which is an amazing feeling! My comprehension has also improved drastically–even if I get stuck looking up a bunch of new words in a long sentence, I’m following the train of thought and not having to go back and re-read a lot. I’m really feeling the wonderful effects of Wanikani! Wao!
It’s almost cherry blossom/graduation season in Japan! Soon a new school year will start; perhaps about the time I am arriving at level 60…

The weather is becoming more refreshing. I have the windows open. Familiar birdsongs are returning. Recently I’ve heard a mourning dove, robins, and a woodpecker.
I finished my first book (in English) of the year and went to the bookshop to find another. I came back with two!
I’ve leveled up to 56 and did the first batch of Kanji lessons. This is a grind, no doubt. But thanks to a stable routine as of late, I will continue to progress.
With the backlog of vocabulary, I imagine I’ll be on level 60 for weeks before I can eat cake! But vocabulary lessons fly by almost instantly. I find them much easier than the kanji lessons. I’m encountering many words reading Japanese Wikipedia and NHK articles! Recently I learned ‘invasive species’ (侵入種), which raccoons are in Japan.
I also recently started playing ぽこ あ ポケモン. I was delighted to see that there was a Japanese language option for gameplay, and even more delighted to find that I’m at a point where I can enjoyably play a game in Japanese. This article-reading practice is doing wonders for my reading speed and comprehension! Wao!
Funnily enough, because the game is designed for a younger audience there is far more hiragana and katakana than kanji, which makes it more difficult for me to read. But I imagine it will get easier.
I am glad I am not the only one that runs into that specific problem
Somehow, kana words for words I only saw in Kanji before trip me up. Not to say that Kanji words not trip me up aswell, but that does not feel as bad
hahah I know, right? its like there are so many possibilities with phonetics alone, whenever I encounter a word spelled out without kanji it takes me a while to figure out, which meaning are you supposed to be again?
