🌠 A quest to learn japanese! (meagstudies' study log)

IT’S ALMOST THE END!! Sending a preemptive “congratulations” because you’ve really worked so hard and I’ve learned so much from your journey. Huge accomplishment!! Make sure to have some cake when you get there in a few weeks ^–^

Still working through level 59! I’ve done about half the kanji lessons, going to do the other half this weekend.

So far I’ve only really been focusing on vocab leeches w/ common word combos bc those make them way easier for me to remember. But in case y’all are curious about my leeches in general, here’s my worst ones :face_with_peeking_eye:

Thank you guys!! <3 Definitely gonna grab some cake, I’m already planning to go to a local bakery that makes really good buttercream cupcakes

Bunpro

Went through the Bunpro N5 vocab list just to see if there was anything I didn’t know. I’ve been using the vocab srs for about a month, and I have some thoughts:

  • god I wish I could bulk edit (add to reviews / mark as mastered)
  • I still think Bunpro is best at grammar explanations, but overall I like the fill-in-the-blank style…
  • except for conjugatable items. I really don’t like how if you have a conjugated verb (e.g., the fill in the blank is ___った and you have to type サボ. I’d rather just have to type サボった)
  • But yeah other than that I think the fill-in-the-blank style is a decent way to study vocab with context. I still prefer learning vocab through authentic texts though

As for grammar: I don’t have any ghosts and I barely have any troubled grammar! And I’m starting to burn (master) N3 grammar!! Woooo! So I think once I get to level 60 on WK and read a few more books I’ll start N2 grammar

Reading

omg there’s so many cool book clubs popping up, I really want to join them all but based on my track record i know that’s not gonna work out lol. I made a gantt chart real quick to see how much overlap there would be if I joined the clubs and read some other things too (some start/end dates estimated)

(that top green one is 神さまがまちガえる3)
green = reading now, yellow = starting within a week, blue = upcoming book club. not pictured is red = finishing within a week

I was going to read セーラー服と機関銃 with the IBC but I’ve decided to wait for a bit since a bunch of other clubs are about to start. I’ve also decided to return to 夜カフェ this summer! It’s been a long time and I didn’t think I’d ever pick it up again, but I kinda miss reading it. And I want to see how much easier it is 2 years later (has it really been that long?)

Super exciting to seeing you so close to the finish line :star_struck:
I’m curious about your item distribution, how many apprentice, how many already burned items?
I like what you did with the Gantt chart, I did something similar with an ugly-spreadsheet and I think April will be busy

(Note: I can only assure that this applies to WK items:)

If 治 is the first character, then it is read ち, and if it’s not the first character, it’s read じ; the only exception to this (at least among WK items) would be 全治(ぜんち), but appearently, even in this case, ぜんじ appears to be a valid (but rarely used) reading, because when I once inputted that during a review, WK gave me a shake warning that said “This is possible, but what’s a far more common reading?”.

omg thank you for the tip! I never realized!

A quick look through Jisho shows the pattern of “If 治 is the first character, then it is read ち” too. There’s some exceptions but they’re words that can have ち or じ (治承 = Jishou/Chishou era) or are ateji for katakana (治具 = ジグ = jig (as in the tool)). The other way around though (if not the first character, 治 = じ) isn’t as common outside of WK, but it still seems like a good rule of thumb

Now that I think about it, I guess this is just rendaku. So it makes sense that じ wouldn’t really be used in the beginning. …Now I wonder if 治 was actually read as ち/ぢ before the script reform. Like if 政治 was originally せいぢ. Although then I guess Meiji (明治) would have been Meidzi… although you never know with romanization lol)

Regardless, I think this leech is finally going to get squashed!

Yes, and there is something similar for 大! For every single vocab on WK where 大 is not the first kanji, 大 is always read as だい! This can be thought of as rendaku as well.

omg yeah I try not to join book clubs during April bc I tend to be busy then (this year included) and i’m already bad enough with sticking with clubs as it is lol… but I wanna read all these books so bad!!

Are D14-21, the 65432, and the Q7/Q8 columns in your spreadsheet book clubs too? If so, woah that’s a lot of clubs, good luck!!

(thank you for motivating me to do my reviews this morning so I can have a truly accurate count here :joy:)

Up until recently I’ve been using Lesson Lock so I only do reviews when Apprentice+(Guru/10)<150, but now I’m doing 15/day with the new lesson algorithm. At this point I’m just trying to get to the end!

But before recently it was pretty typical to see ~110 apprentice and ~400 guru. or maybe more like 115:350

Scripts in the screenshot
  • WaniKani Dashboard SRS and Leech Breakdown - breaks down apprentice/guru into their smaller levels (e.g., I have 60 Apprentice 4), also shows how many leeches (124 guru leeches…)
  • Levels by SRS - highest level where 90% have reached that level. e.g., I have burned at least 90% of level 35!
  • Progress Percentages - the wkstats charts but on your dash! I set it to jouyou kanji progress

Kinda yes, D is the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar and Q is Quartet, will start book 2, chapter 7 in April. Oops the column 65432 is just the count down to figure out when to have the poll for book 2 for the IBC so that it is 6 weeks before the start date

Haha you’re welcome. I find your number of Apprentice a bit higher than where I’d be comfortable with if it was mine, but I guess for you at this point it doesn’t matter, not many more lessons you can add now! However wow super impressed by your number of burns. Very nice, not many items left that can appear in your review queue!! Good luck for the finish line!!

It seems that, in the initial position 治 is indeed usually ち; but in the final position, there are other major exceptions other than 全治(ぜんち), namely 統治(とうち) and 自治(じち). Also, 不治(ふじ) / 不治(ふち).

About 大, final position does seem to be mostly だい.

Though in this case, I simply recall ちあん well (without regards to Kanji, but rather meaning).

I also have this leech, but I’ve recently been getting it right more often.

Early congratulations on level 60, it’ll happen soon^tm

It won’t be long until you reach level 60 and I just wanted to congratulate you in advance (and I hope that you’ll get to enjoy those cupcakes soon)!

I think you said in an update last year that you wished to reach level 60 and move on to N2 grammar this year and it’s so satisfying to see you reaching your goal just as planned as well as witnessing all of your progress since I began lurking here. :eyes:

I edited this crunchy gif in like 2 minutes I have no idea what I’m doing

Wanikani

I’ve reached Level 60! It doesn’t feel like I’m finally done. Maybe because I still have all those lessons left to do lol

Thank you everyone for supporting me on my kanji quest! Don’t know when I’ll be done with my official Level 60 post but I’m having a lot of fun making it

Reading + Listening

Almost done with 気になってる人が男じゃなかった thanks to the Read Every Day challenge!

At this point idk if I’ll ever get back to 神さまがまちガえる lmao

I’ve been listening to Nihongo con Teppei in the car to and from class, it’s not completely active listening since, you know, I’m driving, but it’s not entirely passive either

it’s kinda sad not posting that level up png anymore :pensive: gotta come up with a replacement

I actually wrote this update a while ago but saved it to drafts instead of posting?! Whoops. Updated a few things and posting it now!

文法

Starting the new non-JLPT deck since it’s full of things like ぞ and ぜ and わ. I also started N2, going to do a max of 1 lesson per day. The rest of my grammar study is going to be solidifying grammar I learned earlier.

I really need to figure out a good routine for studying grammar outside of reading and Bunpro. BP’s good for teaching and reading’s good for seeing grammar in context, but I’d like to try getting used to complex sentences and different nuances. I guess I could pick a book to do solely intensive reading with, but that gets boring pretty quick. I have the Kanzen N3 grammar workbook that’s been collecting dust, maybe I could use that? But iirc that’s more for JLPT study… idk I guess I’ll figure it out

読書や視聴

Does shadowing my headphones going 「ブルートゥース接続しました」etc count as speaking practice? Other than that… I’ve now listened to 4 hours 26 minutes of Japanese this year. Mostly Nihongo con Teppei in the car to and from class. My goal by the end of the year is 1000 minutes (16 hours 40 minutes).

JFF is coming up in June, I’d love to try and watch at least 1 without English subtitles

鰐蟹

My level 60 post is sitting in my drafts… it’s mostly done but then finals happened

26/30 level 60 kanji gurued! I hate that 漣 doesn’t have any vocab.

In other (non-Japanese) news…

I officially have an M.A. in Linguistics!!!
cat-jam
For those who were reading my study log last year, yes I did grad school in 1 year, but it still was actually 2 years bc my uni’s ling program has a program where you can start grad classes in your undergrad. So don’t worry I didn’t actually cram all of grad school in 1 year, I think I’d go insane if I did lol

Ooh need to keep an eye out for those! @NicoleIsEnough will you make a thread again this year by any chance?

Congrats!!! Must be nice to be on the other side of your finals  do you know what’s next for you then?

Thank you!! I’m in the middle of the job hunt so I don’t really know what’s next  Looking at all sorts of things (not just linguistics) since I have an IS bachelor’s too. But eventually I’d love to use my ling degree with making language learning software and doing some language revitalization work, stuff like that
