Absolutely do not make camp by standing water!!! :person_gesturing_no: :person_gesturing_no: :person_gesturing_no: :prohibited: :no_entry: We will get malaria and die! Also standing water is not safe to drink :no_entry: The survival tips said building a wooden shelter (or treehouse idk i wasnt looking up that many words at that point) is best so we should def head for the trees.

Welcome to Stage I of :ocean: :spouting_whale: 太平洋を泳ぎぬけ - Escape from the Pacific Ocean!

We peak out of the raft into the clear night sky. :shooting_star: We don’t see any sea creatures that might have hit the boat. But looking out over the crest of the next wave .. it looks like an island in the distance! It’s not too far and we manage to row to the shore. :desert_island:

We can’t see a lot and just manage to pull the raft all the way to the top of the beach and we settle in to sleep in the raft. :last_quarter_moon_face:

The next mowing we wake up with the sun and birds. We’re in a rocky cove! Looking around, we see the other side of the island is forested. Let’s see if we can set up camp somewhere less exposed and away from the pools of standing water

:compass: See you at scene :eight::two::white_exclamation_mark: ( also read 91 )

Decision...

I’ve been in Japan, and I’ve seen people eat raw seafood (for example, oysters). But I know that Jews are forbidden from eating “shellfish”, which this 貝(かい) qualifies as… And I suspect that the law came about in times of low- to no-refrigeration due to a high incidence of food poisoning. …
…I appreciate that shellfish, like bottom-feeding catfish, tend to consume and concentrate ocean floor icky stuff… But I still LOVE shrimp, etc. I don’t recognize this shellfish, but I haven’t heard of any downright “poisonous” ones (like blowfish)…
… So I can’t really tell, but I’m hoping that both options involve picking up a few of these shellfish?
… Either way, night is coming soon and we need a SIGNAL FIRE, as well as fire for warmth, as well as fire for cooking… And I WILL eat cooked shellfish (after removing the guts)…
…I can probably come back and get more of these tomorrow/later?
… So I guess that means I choose Scene 33.

thought I’d try something for fun… renshuu is testing out a new pdf output and since this is the vocab from the bookclub thread

CW

not really sure if the qr code works and haven’t checked/tested this but something people may wanna do for fun… enjoy

realize only gave the “english” version.
…this is the same crossword with the kanji instead of the english clues
because you could lookup readings - probably way easier than going from the english version

kanji version

Eating raw shellfish may be OK in a restaurant setting, but in the wild? Sounds risky. Besides, we need fire to get warm during the night too. Let’s build a fire first, and then cook the shells.

The crossword puzzle is such a fun idea! Is there a fixed link? I’m old school and have no idea how to go from a qr code image on my tablet to the link…

go to the site and then build a schedule for the vocab
however, I posted this because I’m a pro member thought some people might find it fun to do

Renshuu is a free service but a few things like custom crosswords from your own vocab schedules are a paid feature.

If you are a pro user you can go to your account and then click on the schedule

from there you can do the puzzle online as well (on your phone or tablet)

This PDF with everything neatly on a single page is a new feature (maybe still buggy) but for pro members can now export that PDF and load onto a tablet or kindle or whatever and write directly on them. You can still use the older exporting methods but it wasn’t as clean.

If someone really wants to go with renshuu pro their lifetime is super cheap compared to others that has the link with the difference between the free and paid. They do have sales every so often, think I got my lifetime pro for around 100-110 bucks a while back.

You don’t need to go pro though to use the regular study stuff… you can use the standard tools for kanji, grammar, vocab basically free. This is why I built the vocab and sentences in renshuu…the info is there and not locked behind a paywall.

tbf, most of the ways shellfish kill you doesn’t matter whether they’re cooked or not, but I still voted for fire.

I love an oyster in the half shell, but you need some vinegar and shallots to slurp them up with :joy:

Welcome to Stage J of :ocean: :spouting_whale: 太平洋を泳ぎぬけ - Escape from the Pacific Ocean!

We wander around and find a big crooked tree to build a fort and incorporate our raft into it. Shelter :white_check_mark:.

we’re getting more hungry… but we only see a bunch of shellfish, maybe we’re not that desperate. Let’s build a fire and see if we can come up with ideas involving cooking! :fire:

¿Porque no los dos?
Seriously, if fishing is going to take a long time, but it’s easy to catch crickets (grasshoppers? I honestly don’t know the difference between all of these in English ), grab some for a snack, go try and catch fish, and hopefully you’ll get both.

That said, I picked the insects bc apparently we have so much to do on our deserted island we don’t have the time to be sourcing two types of food

Eating insects is definitely fine in a survival scenario. I vote insects because who knows, if we try to go fishing we may be waylaid by some other random disaster on the way.

Also, I would have voted eat the shellfish :joy:
