Oh, I do have the version with pictures! My version is the softcover with the red border. Just turns out that the hardcover book with the same cover picture has different pictures inside… Which version of the book do you have?

It’s an old book. I have the same page numbering but I bought my copy many years ago when I fist started Japanese. (I took a looong break before restarting!).

I second this. Could someone with another edition gid the page numbers of the first few chapters. If our copies have pictures it is likely that the numbering will diverge as the book goes on…

Looking forward to reading with you all.

The page numbers for all the chapters are in the reading schedule in the OP (you need to open the details). Maybe you can add your page numbers to the table as well? (Or, if the table looks too daunting, just post them here so somebody else can take care of adding them?)

Woah stumbled on this thread randomly, maybe now I’ll finally stop putting this off. I bought the whole series a long time ago for the beautiful covers. Seriously, look at how beautiful:

Yes, it took some effort finding them all in high res, and the physical covers feel even more beautiful. @Radish8 maybe you can use this for the main thread cover.

Awesome, thank you.

Well, kind of… having seen the rest of the covers I’m even more sad that I don’t have them myself!

This old duffer can’t figure out how to edit someone else’s forum post but can just about count pages in a book.

Here is a table I’ve prepared in the same fomat at the OP. I’ve tried to chop the text into equal chunks taking the full page pictures into account. Should be within a page or two of the OP. Hope someone finds it useful.
Looks bad but it comes out OK if you pase it into a spreadsheet. Find my stuff in the ‘This book’ coloumn.

(sorry, you can’t actually edit the OP!)

Thanks very much for this. I’m thinking, with all the different definitions, that I will keep the schedule in the OP to versions 1 and 2, as these are the most common by far (I’ll link to your post). What I’ll do instead though is add more detail to the discussion thread start posts.

Oh sorry, my fault! I thought the OP had been turned into a wiki (so that everybody can edit it) but that was another book club :woman_facepalming:
(All those book clubs, so confusing…)

I know

you were probably thinking of Fruits Basket

Of course, because I need to edit its OP, so I checked beforehand :joy_cat:

Now I’m curious about the different pictures…

My copy with pictures is the original English release (aka the other cover with the balloons).

Oh, great overview of the pics! Here are the differences between your pics and mine (v1, red border, softcover):

01 is missing (I have 13 on the title page)
I have 15 on the first page
05 is different (it’s before the index and says もくじ in the pillow)
06 is missing
23 is missing
40 is missing

Really interesting why they made such subtle changes…

The gorgeous cover more than makes up for the lack in furigana

And even though this version doesn’t have the pictures in the text like the other version, there’s at least this one picture of Kiki and Jiji inside

(Also: I finished Chapter 1 today )

My book just came in and it’s the same format as this, so thanks for putting it together!

Really pleased with the hardcover and the illustrations. Looking forward to reading this book with a Ghibli playlist :y

I bought the audiobook and I think it’s going to be very helpful. :slightly_smiling_face:
Thank you @kmurgs for mentioning the audiobook and @slither for providing the link.

wow…this book is challenging … definitely way above my reading level now…annoying because I recognize more grammar and vocab, haha…at least ch1 is done for now…but when we reach the fast pace…probably not looking good for me …but who knows…maybe it will get easier

You’re not alone. I literally lost the plot right after あるところに…

Like those who read this story a couple of years back, it might be good to set a benchmark and revisit this in a couple of years to see how far we’ve come on our Japanese language journey.

Or, take the slightly saner option and choose something more suitable right now, thereby saving me from myself.

I had a random thought in the midst of my insomnia last night. At the time it seemed like a good idea, but it probably isn’t!

Two things I’ve found frustrating reading through the previous chapter 1 thread are:

  1. unsurprisingly, the posts discuss the pages in variable order, so I had to search through to find the relevant posts (and there’s about 150)
  2. there’s fairly minimal blurring of what I would call spoilers, though maybe it’s just me, so when hunting through, I struggled not to see what was happening a few pages on

I was wondering if it may be worth making a post with a collation of the previous discussions by page number, essentially kicking off the official start of the reading, by quoting the previous posts.

Cons

  1. possibly quite difficult to do, though I’m happy to try having read through a few times
  2. the previous posters will presumably get loads of notifications about being quoted, which might be annoying

Thoughts?
