Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

  • For the Bookwalker version of this manga, the page numbers in the panels and the page number in the UI are always 2 apart. If you subtract 2 from the UI page number, this will give you the accurate page number!

Apologies for being a day late here!

Anyway, after this week, we move to a chapter a week. How is everyone feeling about the pace?

I’m a bit ahead as I’ve had extra time, so for me, the faster pace will be good.

Thank you for coordinating this!

That was a good break point for this chapter - this felt like reading a separate chapter this week.

Regarding pacing I’m happy either way. If there are some who would like to stay at this pace and carry on a chapter every 2 weeks I have no objection.

This week’s reading:

Summary

I never trusted that merchant guy from the start, but what a bad man - he wanted to kill the mum and take the babies! Eve did a great job at managing to find a way to save the lynx without hurting the human. Who is the mysterious character who arrives at the end of the chapter?

The sound effects in Japanese manga are hard to learn and often you don’t need to understand them to follow the story. But occasionally they are more important.

This website: Japanese-to-English SFX Sound Effects Translations @ The JADED Network - is really useful for looking up sound effects that don’t appear in a standard dictionary.

On page 91 I don’t think I quite caught what was happening. The sound effect says ぷっくー, but in the sound effect dictionary it’s or ぷくー that is listed. In retrospect it perhaps should have been more obvious to me from the pictures that she was breathing in to build up her magic, like she did at the end of chapter 2.

It was exciting to see Eve in action as a witch beyond gardening and finding missing cats and things like that.

Story details

Her promise not to use magic against people created a real dilemma when she was confronted with the situation involving the evil trader and the sabretooth wildcat and her cubs. I thought it was really cool that she managed to resolve the situation without hurting either party.

I spent some time thinking about the sentence on page 97:
怒りに身を任せず理解で抑えた。

I ended up with the translation:
”You used reason to control the situation without giving in to anger . ”

A sign that she is growing up and becoming more mature.

I’m personally fine with the slower pace, but I’ll also try to keep up if we continue with the faster pace from chapter 4.

I’ll struggle if we speed up, but I knew when we started that I’d be busy during the reading period, and I can accept glossing over some things to keep up!

Thank you for the link - it’s very useful. I usually don’t pay too much attention to the sound effects, so I hadn’t realized they could have such specific meanings.

I went back to check a few scenes where I had been curious about what was going on. For example, on page 68, when the haunted house innkeeper says 「ここをどこだと思ってんだよ」, there’s a どろーん in the background that I suspected might be significant. It turns out it can imply something like a magical transformation, which lines up nicely with the spirits appearing in that scene.
