霧のむこうのふしぎな町 ・ Mysterious Town Beyond the Mist (BBC) 🌬 🏘

@NicoleRauch, with regard to Read Aloud times, the poll confirmed that we do not have a slot that would work for more than 2 people :frowning: I’ll continue on discord, so not to pollute the thread.

Thank you for organising @sansarret. It doesn’t matter much to me - my work hasn’t got fixed times, so unfortunately I might have to give it a miss every once in a while independently of the time.

TBH I have no idea regarding my availability for the rest of the book as I will be traveling, volunteering, staying in hostels etc. So it does not make sense for me that you focus on my availability… If none of the other experienced readers like @Kyasurin , @Myria , @Belerith want to take the lead, you can still get together with the other „beginner“ readers and practice at the same time as before  Or, if interest is really dwindling, then maybe the session is bound to die… (which wouldn’t surprise me in the least, from my past experience, I‘m rather surprised how long it lasted!)

With new vote added, let’s just keep the old time, and see who shows up.

Starting chapter 4 this week:

By the end of this week, we’re actually about halfway through the book, page-wise.

If you don’t see yourself catching up, maybe you should pause this book, refresh yourself with Flying Witch, and then come back to this afterward.

I know the feeling! Moving really jostled my schedule, and I’ve been focused on reviews and manga reading, so I’m a week or two behind here now. I did get the first chapter of the book in English read, and am glad to see there was very little I hadn’t caught form going through it in Japanese. (But that’s also the chapter I invested the most time into.)

I’m going to force myself to finish reading this in Japanese, though, even if it takes me a few months longer than the schedule!

I’ll probably be doing this. I’m reading Sailormoon, Aoharu, and Flying Witch is coming up. The book club discussions aren’t going away, so they’ll still be here waiting for me. Currently I’m prioritizing reviews and manga, and 町 gets read in any free time after that.

What wanikani level should I get to before I even start thinking about the beginner book club?

For a book with furigana, you could be at Wanikani level 1.

However, you’ll want to have N5 and maybe half of N4 grammar knowledge to even begin to be able to read comfortably. If you’re not familiar with what N5 and N4 mean, think of them as categorizations for how common and difficult the grammar is. The higher the number, the easier and more common the grammar (with N5 being the starting rank).

Further, the more words you know in advance the better. I probably know over 3,000 words, and our current read’s been beating me up with all the words I don’t know! (But WaniKani book clubs tend to have a helpful user-populated vocabulary sheet which can give you a boost on which words to learn.)

Edit: For a book that is aimed at young readers, but is without furigana (such as the non-furigana release of the Kiki’s Delivery Service books), completing level 15 in WaniKani ensures you’ll be able to read about 80% of the kanji you come across, and getting to level 40 ensures you can read roughly 95% of the kanji you’ll come across. This is assuming the book doesn’t have a lot of difficult kanji, or very genre-specific terminology.

also there is the absolute beginner book club for those with less knowledge…maybe consider checking that out too…

Should be caught up by COB tomorrow. Quick question–is there a reason the polls are time limited? I wanted to change my “I’m still reading but…” answers to “I’m reading…” but it won’t let me.

Which poll are you talking about? No poll I could see was time limited, and I could edit the few I tried.

It looks like some of the earlier polls have been closed. None of the current ones have timers, so maybe @Radish8 is closing them manually.

Oh, you are right! I didn’t realize the button was grayed out.
So, yes, I also agree that there’s no reason for closing those.

Oh, I can open them if everyone thinks that would be better  I think of the polls as giving a snapshot of how everyone was doing during the week when the thread was current, so if everybody gradually updates their status to ‘reading along’ it doesn’t really help you see where people fell behind or managed to catch up…

But if it’s better as a motivator that’s fine ^^

On which note…

Vote please!

We have chapter 6 coming up in a couple of weeks. It’s a short chapter, so it’s currently scheduled to take one week only, but that will be quite a lot of reading compared to the rest of the schedule.

Please indicate whether you think we should stick to one week, or extend it to two. I know we voted on this at the beginning, so sorry to revisit, but I think everybody is much better equipped to give an opinion now.

  • Read chapter 6 over one week
  • Read chapter 6 over two weeks
