Ah… yeah… no, I know of the anime but have never watched it. The name sounded so similar that I didn’t realize it was actually Gintama. But wordplay though haha

I’d say give it a try for a few more episodes. There’s a lot of variation in Gintama in regards to the themes and humor. Sometimes it’s slapstick comedy, sometimes it’s puns, sometimes it’s straight up potty humor, sometimes it’s parodies of other famous anime and pop culture things. Other times it turns into epic adventure/battle sagas with deep character development. Gintama has it all and more. But the downside is that it’s not all that consistent or necessarily coherent even. But it’s a lot of fun either way.

i agree with @jneapan it takes a little while to settle into its groove, and not all of the humour lands even in the later episodes, but it’s well worth giving it the time imo, and when it’s good, it’s really good.
but if it’s not your kind of humour, that’s okay too! i know for me there’s some cringe humour in there that i can’t stand, and sometimes things aren’t for you and that’s okay!

I’m working in Japan as an ALT. I have a lot of downtime at work so I do a lot of WK at my desk. Having kintama pop up in my lessons in the middle of the school staff room was definitely a top 5 embarrassing moment.
Luckily no one noticed but it definitely kept me on my toes for a while.

There is also a great Youtube channel of the same name (spelled out in romaji) for any Sumo fans out there. That was actually the first time I encountered the term.
