Not sure where this belongs so the category might be incorrect.
Either way, I have the opinion that mnemonics should be self contained so including a link to some old toy that people might not know, or even remember, seems more like a hindrance than helpful. So here’s my mnemonic suggestion.
“This electrical scooter makes one sound going forward but another in reverse. That electrical whir of ぎゃく, ぎゃく, ぎゃく trails off the farther the scooter goes.”
I agree that cultural references should probably eventually all get purged if possible, for the sake of future-proofing the site, but for this to replace the mnemonic from WK’s perspective, it would have to introduce some kind of keyword. It has to also work with other kanji that have the same reading, though in this case there’s only one, 虐.
Ah I see. That restriction might inadvertently keep existing cultural references in place though. Guess it can’t be helped.
Does the link to the video work for you? I never watched the video during reviews because I probably thought that the mnemonic wasn’t going to work anyway. I tried watching it from the kanji page and I get this error.
Apparently the address from the kanji and the video are smushed together, if I manually remove the part from wanikani it takes me to the video.
