識 and other kanji weird meaning

I used search option and found some complaints similar to mine but all such topics were closed so I decided to make a new one.
So, just as in the title - I found a lot of kanji that meaning in english is simply wrong here. After seeing “discrimination” for “識”, I felt it is too much and I really have to write about it. Another disturbing thing is that a lot of so called “radicals” are actual kanji and its meaning is sometimes completely different from mnemonics. I understand that meaning or reading “explanation” can use many abstract ideas to help remember an item, but learning totally wrong meaning of so called radical is just sad (for such prize :P)

And well, I wanted to complaint a little, so I did, but in general I love wanikani and whole idea is just great:)

Looks like it’s a meaning in English that you’re not familiar with.

What’s wrong with it? It’s a valid meaning such as in the word 識別 which means discrimination/discernment.

Well, it may form a word with such meaning with another kanji, but there is no way to admit, that discrimination is valid meaning for “識”

Why do you think so?

Search Key: 識 Current Dictionary: Jpn-Eng General (EDICT)
識 [JIS] 3C31 [Uni] 8b58 [部首] 149 [教育] 5 [画数] 19 [音] シキ [訓] し.る しる.す [名] さと さとる [英] discriminating; know; write

Because discriminating is a valid definition for 識 if you look at the relevant English definition for “discriminating”. It may not be the best choice because it’s ambiguous in English, but that doesn’t make it wrong.

Discern and discriminate have very similar meanings. Why is the problem only with only discriminate?

Thank you guys, things you write make a lot of sense and I might be wrong.
Previously I searched for kanji origin in my electronic dictionary and ask japanese friend if this meaning sounds right, since I have totally oposite explenation (rather deep understanding and full knowlage). My conclusion was that “discrimination” wasn’t quite right, but now I see that there actually really exist such meaning so sorry for mistake (still I am not sure if such meaning is really a common one:P)

Thank you for fast replies!

Knowledge/wisdom are also valid meanings. That likely could be better called out in the secondary meanings WK provides.

Also maybe your Japanese friend didn’t quite understand the nuance of how discriminating/discerning can share a similar meaning?
