虫歯... う蝕? 齲歯?

I’ve seen a debate between my friends upon which way むしば is usually written, can someone clarify? some claim its 齲 while I’ve seen 虫歯 on NHK which confuses me, if anyone can clear it up, that’d be awesome!

虫歯 is a common well-known kanji compound.

I had never heard of 齲歯 until seeing this thread.

I’m curious what would give someone the impression that 齲歯 is the more common one.

It’s in my jpdb vocab, which suggests I saw it somewhere. Probably in 骨と墓の考古学 大都市江戸の生活と病 | L39 but possibly in something else that was fond of old/odd kanji choices.

虫歯 is definitely the most common, though; the corpus ngram tool in wwwjdic says

虫歯 1248550 86.0%
むし歯 186943 12.9%
齲歯 1894 0.1%
むしば 14801 1.0%
