We read volume one as part of the Beginner Book Club. This is a spin off club to continue reading the series together.

All the discussion will take place on this thread and I’ll post a participation poll each week as we start the next section.

So Frieren’s bag seems to be bottomless :thinking: Aside from the very beginning where I thought, gosh they travel light, this whole time I didn’t really think about where they store all their stuff.

Any thoughts on the chapter title: 皇帝酒?

I’m thinking “emperor’s brew,” but can’t make out what the furigana implies … positively-have-to? like “mosdef”? As in, “you mosdef have to try this emperor’s brew?”

From what I can find it seems it’s from German’s boshaft, which seems to mean “malicious” or “spiteful”. Not sure how well that fits with this particular alcoholic beverage, but since the chapter mentions it was the lowest quality beverage served during the emperor’s coronation, maybe it was considered like something done out of spite to people of low class attending the ceremony or something…

hmmm…not sure how I feel about this chapter… just kind of meh…
some of the magic in the story telling felt missing or something in this story somehow…
maybe just me… :person_shrugging:

I must say I didn’t feel the same, I enjoyed this chapter. I guess it’s playing on some of the same themes we’ve seen before - as soon as we saw the ancient tablet signed by the mysterious ミリアルデ, I feel like we knew that she was going to be an old acquaintance of Frieren who would already know the backstory. I like how we get two sets of flashbacks, some to 80 years ago, and some to hundreds of years ago. I was also happy that ファス took the disappointment of decades of work and laughed it off with a party!

Am I the only one who finished this chapter interested in learning 古エルフ語?

Chapter 71

I did not remember Genau, thank you Frieren for making it explicit who he was!

A rather dark chapter, a big chunk of it with corpses visible on the floor. They really wanted us to feel the characters’ anger. Genau knew the baker’s son. Stark’s village was similarly attacked. They are thirst for revenge! I wonder if this is the start of a longer story arc of it this draws to a conclusion quickly?

I wonder if the supposed son of the 魔族 will play a role. I felt like the mage arc characters would show up again, I didn’t quite expect it to be them and this soon though

For demons that only use human speech to deceive and attack humans…

they sure do speak to each other quite a bit…

or maybe it’s some magic isekai auto translate for our benefit …

Chapter 72

That is a very nice observation!!

This is shaping up to be an interesting story arc. I like the slightly Machamp-like bad guy. And his very cute little accomplice, who looks like she should be hanging out in a high school manga, but presumably is a force to be reckoned with and pure evil…

I get a bit lazy sometimes reading as I have 3/4 of the tablet screen as the manga, and a dictionary on the side of the screen so that I can easily look up words. So I typed 二刀流 into the dictionary even though the meaning was fairly obvious from context. The first definition was “liking both alcohol and sweets, person who likes both liquor and sweets” - which feels like a very random (and Japanese) concept to have a single word for!

Another language point I picked out this week is that 三度の飯より好き is a set phrase - “very fond of, more fond of than eating, so fond of that someone would rather not eat than go without, more important than three meals a day”
