葬送のフリーレン ・Frieren 🧝‍♂️ Volume 5 [Now Reading!]

Chapter 40

hmmm, i wonder what kind of name can ラオフェン be, Lao Feng?

…it’s Laufen ;_;

無茶苦茶, love this word xddd

also liked the additivity of 誇り高い, as if the pride can be high or low ^^

把握 is a completely new word to me where I couldn’t even think of what the reading for it could be, but that’s one of the chances where I’m really happy that furigana is on the side and you can just put it in DeepL xddd

This chapter is a great example of simple expressions using hard kanji and hard vocabulary and I felt so silly putting stuff like “嵌まり全滅した” into the translator just to find out it’s 倒れたと全く負けた, ehhh xdd

But I’m on the roll, I’m catching up with the remaining chapters!

Chapter 41

It’s my first time reading in. Japanese, so let me tell you that using kanji meanings and german readings for spells is amusing and entertaining :upside_down_face:

基礎的な魔法, that’s a fun expression C:

桁がちがう, i dont believe i’ve even seen this kanji, yet alone this expression, before

品性の欠片もない is such a cute expression, but very much impractical, I’m just hoping it would eventually show up in future reading as well

As for 時間稼ぎか, I might integrate it in my vocabulary even outside of Japanese ^^

And with 躊躇い臆する, when I started writing this using IME, it didn’t pick the kanji immediately and I needed to press the arrow down a few times, I wonder if this word is more popular with kana than with kanji :eyes:

取引といこうか, what an elegant ending to the chapter C:

Chapter 42

塒 vs す, who would win ^^

よっぽど
おれたち reading for 第8パーティー, thanks for the refresher xddddd

There is one expression that I liked in the Polish translation more than in the Japanese script, it’s “Kłamiesz jak z nut” = “you lie as if you’re playing from the music sheet”, in Japanese it’s 嘘上手じゃん, it’s an idiomatic expression in Polish that’s fairly well known, so I like it when they introduce quirks like those ^^

Also, 相当な食わせ物だよ, “nie da sobie w kaszę dmuchać” = “will not let you cool down their buckwheat bowl”, the localizer of this chapter to Polish is GREAT xdddd

饒舌, gaduła (yapper xddd)

捨ててっても, awww C:

バカなガキだな into “byłem tępym szczeniakiem” - “I was a dull puppy”

今まで苦労はなんだったんだ into “i po co wypruwaliśmy sobie żyły?” = “to what end have we spurced out our veins?”

Martyna Zdonek really rose up to the challenge this chapter, she was great xddd

This chapter felt somewhat easier to read in Japanese than the previous two, but the Polish localiazation was just the cherry on top, I’m glad I read both of the scripts and they both tell their own stories, omg xdd

I’m caught up with the Book Club now! C:

Wirbel having a bad day…

It was nice that it turned around just in time (well, could still get stolen! )

And I’m loving the bored Stark extras

Good plan Frieren :sparkles:
Found this one a bit more difficult, needed my dictionary the whole way

Chapter 41

Wasn’t as keen on this chapter because of the battle between the two meanies. It was very I’m the most evil guy in town and im about to kill you hahaaaa
No I’M the most evil in town and I’m about to kill youuuu
No I AM I’M GONNA DO IT

Lmao so I hope Fern sorts them out

Chapter 42

I find the guy a bit more interesting now, I assume we’ll be seeing more of him

Frieren being unbothered as usual lmao

Shameless plug, what better place to learn more about Flamme than...

Chapter 43

I swear, I can read more and more characters fine and then デンケン comes in and I’m done for xddd

I’ve mined a few fun words in this chapter,
煩わしく, めちゃくちゃ xddd

卑怯な手 I especially love, it also was repeated afterwards as “well, maybe cowardly”, so I’ll try to remember this one ^^

足止め, since デンケン used this word a few times, I was convinced it was a little more literal, like “legs stopped”, but alas xddd

網羅する, it’s using weird and very funky kanji, me likey ^^

also, favorite panel of the chapter:

ch.43

On page 100 足止め’s furigana reads “わしら”(us/we). The author tries to help us understand what Denken referes to with 足止め here(i think). 足止め means prevention or perhaps even obstruction in this context.

Denken says there:

" 現にお前は足止めを煩わしくと思っておる"

Without furigana on 足止め I’d read this:

Actually you must think of this obstruction as annoying/troublesome.

We could replace 'Actually" with “really” in this translation, but to be honest it feels like a weird use of words to me.

WITH FURIGANA the sentence would be read:

Actually you must think of us as annoying/troublesome.

A weird use of furigana that is often used in this manga as I’ve noticed, however in this case it makes me think the Author tries to convey what the character tries to convey indirectly. Some kind of… Doublespeak🤔.

ch.43 again

Was stuck on this sentence for quite a while

Specifically this “人外を疑うほどの化物揃いだ”

The whole bubble must say:

People are simple.
And because of this, the first level mages are suspected to be a set of beasts to the point of being inhuman (or beasts to a inhuman degree)

Thats the best i could do by picking the best matches of words from the dictionary.

This translation was quite difficult for me until i realized 疑う can mean “to suspect” and not just “doubt” as i had it in mind.

Hope the ガキs survive the fight.

ch 43

That caught me out as well

In the opening scene, when Sense appears, the Mangaka makes a point of showing no one around, and then her there. That’s a cool trick, did Sense appear out of thin air?

I’m curious about old-school Denken, what his motivation for the exam is.

Ch. 43

Ahh, I didn’t catch this! Interesting.
Also about the bird on her - concealing the magic is ok but what’s with just general moving of a human being?

Ch. 44

Don’t understand 裁き on p. 124
Is it like “Casting the light of judgment” magic? In roots vocab list there’s nothing for カタストラーヴイア (I remember to check it now!) either.

The spell name is localised i think as Castravia. Yes, light of judgement is probably the best idea.

Not as cool as a judgement cut imho, but very classic.

What better place to read Ch. 44 than...

…just kidding, I read it beforehand, it’s a terrible place to read it but wanted to have this picture for the craic ^^

Ch. 44

魔法の歴史は攻撃と防御の歴史だ。

脅威 is a fun word C:
施す、施したものだ
見習い, not understanding words starting with 見 is my pet peeve xdddd
罠だ! :scream:
対峙する
結界の解析が丁度終わった。:head_shaking_horizontally:

As the chapters go along, it either becomes easier to read, or it’s Denken that says less things, blessed xdd
The trial is almost over now!

This is a good word to learn. Comes up all the time in the Flying Witch manga.

this one shits me because i ALWAYS translate it mentally as ‘get used to seeing’ which… isn’t wrong wrong but… is wrong

Ch 42, p88:

At first, it’s “今から丁度29年前” but then on the same page "4つか5つかのガキの頃の話だ”
Wouldn’t Wirbel know exactly what age he was?

What better place to read Chapter 45 than...

I can think of like 1000 better places but let’s make reading Frieren in different places a thing, greetings from Montreal my fellow Frienerers ^^

Chapter 45

I read a few pages ahead to Chapter 46 to see the results, even though I knew them from anime already xdd

Ahh, tournament arcs, I’m completely unspoiled beyond anime so I hope that in volume 7 there will be more slice of life again ^^

Poor Stark, completely out of it the whole time :sob:
I didn’t have a dictionary with me this time and didn’t take notes, but the panel with "なら木の方だ。叩き折れ。
バスン
。。。デンケン。もう無理だ。” admittedly was really funny C:

We’re two chapters away from the end of this volume, let’s go!

Want to check I’m properly understanding the bit on pages 46/47 please

Chapter 40

Complicated lines: If being a level1 mage was just an abstract symbol of authority/power/prestige, that would be better (than the reality, which is that) for mages, nomatter the amount of power you have, if it’s not human nature to want to seize more, then it’s the same as having no power. So, in my words, it would be better if lv1 was just for bragging rights, but the reality is no matter how much power they have they feel like they might as well have nothing because they want more, as humans naturally do.

Next panel: I, compared to (other mage’s) self, have greatly surpassed, but losing position of power and being surpressed people, lots, came to see. So, he’s saying he’s doing alright for himself but throughout life he’s seen a lot of people who are in a worse position.
Having a lot of power is feared, and the power of fear lasts a long time.

Furthermore, people who bost of having a lot of power are harmless. ? I think, what’s he’s saying is since people who actually have a lot of power get a target painted on their back, the only people who claim to have a lot of power aren’t actually a problem to deal with. Other guy says he understands, and that being as weak as you (デンケン) is the just right amount.

He also says the younger guy can win even if he turns a blind eye (to what they were talking about.) I think. But I’m not sure why.
