I tried to come up with even a vaguely plausible explanation for why looking at a bottle of apple juice and a bottle of orange juice made him think of the girls. But I’ve got nothing…
Caught up to Chapter 39 today!
Finally caught up with the chapter and there were a few expressions I really liked in here, in addition to just words. I decided to compare it with the Polish translation after I was finished and I was surprised by how similar the expressions were, like tit-for-tat translations for the context. For example, when thinking about a barrier, Land said that 塵すら通さない, and I was like “I wonder how would they translate it” - and they just did “not even a grain of sand would be able to get through”, and I was like “damn” xdd
Similar for 全員に喧嘩を売ること, I was a bit hesitant to trust the translator for this to be “fighting against all of them”, but the Polish translation is “the rest of the teams will jump to our throats”, so I’m finally feeling like I’m learning actually useful wordplay in Japanese and not just word-for-word translations xddd
But the absolute favorite quote of the chapter is “算段がある” (counting is there?), according to the Polish localization, “they’ve thought of a plan” ^^
Either way, the design of ラヴィーネ really grows on me, I like her action poses, fun chapter ^^
(you might know this already but) 喧嘩を売る btw is a set phrase that is basically the same as ‘pick a fight’ btw, so the nuance is not just that you’re fighting everyone but specifically that you’re provoking them
算段 is its own word as well that means something like ‘devising a way to deal with’ or ‘working out a way to deal with something’.
Looks like most spells won’t have a German equivalent, and there are numerous spells in this volume. I am looking at here for English spelling. (spoiler ofc)
Still, it would be nice to have a sense of reasoning behind the names. (Waiting for Week 8 or somewhere for big question dumps.)
Week 4 - Frieren Volume 5 - Chapter 41

Chapter 41
Good chapter. We’ve seen Fern battling bad guys now and again over the volumes, but this felt very cool watching her in a one on one battle to the death with another 魔法使い. エーレ didn’t seem very likeable, I was happy to see her demise. It was an interesting final attack where Fern sent those hexagon like things as attack magic, and エーレ was squeezed on all sides until she couldn’t resist any more.
The new girl ユーベル is growing on me. I liked how she used the bird to distract her opponent and then flew right up and hovered in front of him. I thought she was going to take him out at that point but the fight continues to the next chapter…
have a trip coming up so read a few chapters ahead this weekend
now don’t have to worry about behind behind when things settle down
This is clearer in the anime, but it’s less that Fern uses her defensive barriers as squashers and more that her sheer rate of firepower is so overwhelming that Ehre can’t help but get boxed in by her own defensive barriers.
This felt weird to me. Up until now, we have just seen the main characters fight with monsters. In this episode, Fern fights another human to death and there’s not even a mention about it?
Where is this interpretation coming from?
ya’ll cashing in some hot takes before an arc concludes properly
Well, Fern’s party of three was attacked by another party so it was a more complex fight, but Fern seemed to end up in a one on one battle with エーレ. She was being attacked with lethal magic and defending herself with equal intensity, until she overcame and killed her opponent.
Or at least it looked like she died. Maybe she was just temporarily turned into bottle of orange juice…
I mean, Fern just killing someone would be hard to justify, specially due to their apparent difference in power, it’d be punching down (magicking down?)
It’s no longer man-killing spell, but rather, demon-killing spell – unless Fern modifies it further.

Soooo…not dead then!
The birds have great comedic timing
Chapter 38
Honestly I wasn’t really expecting to get into the bickering pair’s backstory but nice to know they’re not as uncooperative as they first appeared. I like how Fern seemed to catch the bird so easily lmao
