I just discovered someone hosted read aloud sessions for Frieren, where people read out loud and ask questions / translate as they went. Maybe that’s helpful for people who are still reading or find this in the future. I’ll link here and in the resources list of the home thread
Great, if anyone wants to run that give a shout, I don’t have capacity at the moment, but it’s a great idea. It could start from volume 2 with the club, but there’s probably time to reread volume 1 before the second one starts…
Hello everyone, I’ve put up the Frieren Volume 2 thread here. Register your participation, set the thread to watching. Get ready to start reading and discussing from Friday July 26th!
Hey everyone, we continue reading Frieren Volume 2 weekly from today, so head over to the discussion thread! I won’t be posting weekly links here, just volume-level updates. So make sure you set the volume thread to watching!
For anyone following this thread who hasn’t started reading yet, the first 2 volumes of Frieren are currently (temporarily) free to read on Bookwalker until 19 Sept 2024. The club is just over halfway through Volume 2, so you could read enough to catch up and decide if you want to join the fun See this post for links (thanks to @Boodil !)
The club is wrapping up Volume 2 this Friday with a solid group of 20+ people. This is a great offshoot club, I’m really enjoying reading with you all.
Thanks to everyone putting in effort on the vocab spreadsheet. It’s a great asset for the club and I’ll create another one like it ready for Volume 3.
Coming soon…
Volume 3 timing
we’re taking a 1 week break between Volume 2 and 3. I will post the Volume 3 thread and get everything ready this weekend (around Friday Oct 4th) with a schedule so that we’re all ready to read Volume 3 from Oct 11th. We’ll read at a chapter per week pace.
other club stuff
I’m not really sure at what point an offshoot talks about increasing pace, etc. From the Volume 2 weekly polls there were enough people falling behind now and then (10-20% in most weeks, peaking at 26% last week) that I wonder if we should wait until after Volume 3 to consider that? Any thoughts, please speak up!
And what do you all think about the one week break in between? I just started that as a default, so I was thinking now might be a good time to poll for that.
The 1 week break between volumes gives a week’s padding every 8 or so chapters. On the other hand, I can imagine people wanting to keep up the momentum with no break. What kind of club should we be? (This would come into effect after Volume 3, we’re still taking a break next week!)
Right now I’m happy with the pace - I’ve overloaded myself a bit with bookclubs at the moment. (Life Pro Tip - Do not try to juggle 8 bookclubs at the same time )
For the same reason, I’m thankful for the week break between volumes at the moment too, as it gives me a bit of extra flexibility!
I’m always happy to go along with what the majority of the club prefers though.
I really like the current pace too. One chapter per week is ideal for me - to understand properly (and maybe reread) and to discuss.
I’m enjoying the club very much. A huge thanks, @mitrac for organizing and everything!
Got a bit RL-busy in the middle, so had to catch up. But otherwise the pace is fine and will want to continue either way.
The break between books is fine - easier for people to catch up if they couldn’t and other give a small breather to come in fresh again.
By the way: is the vocab spreadsheet generally community maintained? I wasn’t sure about this and went rogue with jisho a bit If it is, I’ll be happy to contribute over things I stumble still.
Thanks everyone, that is a lot of voices and perspectives for keeping the current pace so we’ll keep to 1 chapter a week. It sounds like it gives about the right amount of time for reading and discussion, plus Frieren is on the harder end of BBC manga, so doubling the pace would be quite ambitious.
I prefer that myself! I just wanted to check just in case a lot of people were itching to go faster.
The vocab sheet is community maintained, so please do add to it! It’s great to see how much love it gets. It helps me get through tougher sections faster, and when I add words I always hope it helps anyone after me catch up more easily
