Hey devs, just noticed something.
自覚 is defined as “consciousness” but the meaning seems to be closer to conscientiousness, which is a somewhat different concept altogether. Thought it was worth mentioning.

自覚する seems to mean something along the lines of “to realize (something)”, which seems to me closer to “consciousness” in meaning, as a noun.
もっと自分がカワイイことを自覚しなさい! example from drama series Rich Man, Poor Woman.
Have you got an example where the meaning shifts towards “conscientiousness”?
How so? conscientiousness is “the quality of wishing to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly.”
The definition of 自覚 is 自分自身の立場・状態・能力などをよく知ること。“to know well one’s own situation, condition, abilities, etc.”
Hm, this may be cultural. Where I’m from, consciousness is literal, as in, being awake. Like, “the doctor revived the patient to consciousness”. I’ve never heard it used in any other way. Maybe conscientiousness isn’t the word exactly, I’m struggling to think of a better definition.
That meaning of consciousness (the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings) would be 意識. A being can be awake but not have a “sense of self,” which is another definition of consciousness.
I’m more used to seeing “self-consciousness” or “self-awareness” as a meaning for 自覚, personally.
yeah, maybe the wanikani meaning would be better changed to reflect this.
To be fair, you can use “consciousness” that way, in a philosophical discussion or something, to talk about “the self” etc, but not having “self-consciousness” as a synonym as well at least seems incomplete.
I’ve always seen self-consciousness as exclusively along the lines of anxiety from being overly concerned with oneself.
Okay… It’s not exclusively that though.
This entry marks the definition I’m talking about as a philosophy term, but it’s there.
Hmm, I think I would understand that sentence in context, but might have been confused for a little while if it was a synonym on WK.
Self-awareness goes well with consciousness in my head.
Kids nowadays say “woke”
Stay woke.
It would honestly be amazing if they changed the definition to “woke”, 草
Kenkyusha dictionary I have lists similar type definitions as pointed out above by @Leebo and @Saida of ‘self-knowledge’, ‘(self-)awareness’, ‘(self-)awakening’ and 自覚する is listed as ‘become conscious of’ and ‘become aware of’ as definitions. Those would be very distinct from conscientiousness.
