習う字!A Japanese New Year Tradition

These are my two 習う字 drawings for this year.


習う字, literally “learned letters”, is a Japanese tradition in which on January 2nd (clearly I did this a little late lol) you write down words/phrases of what you want for the new year on special paper with special ink made for that purpose, and a week later, you burn them in a fire so that the heavens can ensure that they happen.
Does anybody else participate in this tradition? Let’s get more community participation in this!

I did this, too, though not as big, and not as well. We called it 書初め(かきぞめ) though
