Yes, mostly in formal settings / literary writing, it is common to use the stem of the verb to connect several chained sentences. Apparently this is called “Formal Conjunctive” in grammatical terms.

Off topic:

This is weird… having seen those two words in Romanji, I won’t forget them. In the form of 壁ドン (or かべどん) and ドキドキ they made no impression at all. Seeing them used in English letters in an English sentence, bingo! - there they are, forever in my brain!

I had the sudden thought that I ought to switch to learning only in Romanji, but then realised that wouldn’t help me read Japanese at all! LOL!
