Where’s the none of the above option? I don’t think the 8 weeks option makes much sense. As @MissDagger mentioned, 32 pages is really no different from 34, so splitting the fourth chapter after reading the third all at once doesn’t make sense to me. I’d recommend 6 or 7 weeks. Basically only split the first chapter, or split the first two chapters. I think either of those would be better than the 8 week option.
The reason why it is split up, is to give people time to catch up if 34 pages is too much for them. Because constantly having over 30 pages is not something we usually do, at least not to my knowledge.
It would be interesting to see how people would vote if those options were included though. That said, I’ll just read it faster on my own if needed, and I don’t plan on voting in the poll since it’s obviously not directed at me.
Is that the correct CDJapan link? It looks like it links to a monthly issue of the manga.
This is what is linked:
vs this, which is found found here:
I agree with this, although I’m fine with the 8 week option too
Good catch I fixed the link.
Sorry to everyone that has already voted on the poll, since the poll can’t be changed afterwards I will have to create a new one. Since the slow schedule did not get any backing, the fast schedule was honestly to fast for this club and @seanblue & @MissDagger made some suggestions I have changed the available schedules.

I’d be fine reading it faster, but putting myself in the shoes of the folks who may be just getting started in the beginner’s reading club, I went ahead and voted for the slowest one. Three 30+ page readings in a row seems like it may be kind of daunting for them, even if it’s at the end.
Chapter 5 is so cute and super fast…very little text…that 30 pages might as well be 15-20… when you read it you’ll see what I mean No one should worry about ch5 at all…it was a great way to wrap up the first vol and I think people will enjoy it as well as read it FAST!
For what it’s worth, I split the 耳をすませば chapters to keep them at 17-20 to avoid them being 36-37 per week, and it seems a lot of people are getting through them quickly.
Of course, I don’t want to disregard any readers who are quietly appreciating the shorter chapter pace, and we won’t have all the same people from one club reading in the next.
And I don’t know how the density or difficulty of dialogue compares between the two manga.
This is of course where the voting comes into play =D
The voting has ended and we will be reading this manga according to the 8 weeks schedule. Since the last week would fall onto christmas eve I feel obliged to create another poll on what to do
- Start on Dec 24th and run for 2 weeks
- Start on Dec 24th and run for 1 week
- Start on Dec 31st
- Start on Jan 07th

It’s the final week, no? Just start on December 24th. Don’t need to set an end date. If people want to wait until after Christmas or the New Year to actually read it, that’s up to them.
If there were another week coming after, that might be a different story, but there’s never been an end date on when we can do readings.
I don’t mean it as an end date and more a way to set the start of the next book. Usually we start the next book 2 weeks after the last week started in the previous one. So for “run for 1 week” the next book would start on Jan 7th and for “run for 2 weeks” it would start on Jan 14th
With that result we will be sticking to the usual schedule.
Could someone prepare the vocab sheet? I’m currently only half-functioning with a cold.
If nobody beats me to it, I’ll set one up tonight.
Alright, I have made the sheet. English chapter titles are provisional (仮)until I actually read the book and know that they are correct. If somebody who has read it has a better translation, feel free to replace them!
Thanks a lot! Just one minor thing I noticed the がっこうのかいだん is referring to a staircase in school
Updated! I didn’t even flip through to chapter pages to avoid spoilers and just went with the first かいだん that came to mind (会談).
In retrospect, I guess 会合 would be better for assembly, since 会談 is more like a conference, anyhow.
The time has come we are starting this book club! I hope you guys are all excited.
I’ll probably not post too much for the first few weeks, but I’m reading along in the manga (and in the threads too). I’m currently in Japan, so I actually have a physical copy for once, and I’ll be reading mostly in cafes and public transportation. So none of my usual “trying to understand every sentence down to the last grammar point” and more of “I get the gist and I’m too lazy to pull out my smartphone and check those words in the dictionary”, haha. I think it’ll actually be interesting to see how much I’ll get without dictionary lookups.
Bonus picture of me reading manga in a cafe in Japan. I’m living the dream
