時をかける少女: Week 3 Discussion (Chapter 3)

aaaahhhhh almost feels like there should be a whole different thread for all the ways in which かける is used in this book and in Japanese. I vaguely knew the verb was an especially versatile one but haven’t seen so many uses ever.
ときをかける : must mean ‘leaps over time’…
へやをかけでる : why is かけ used at all there? how does it make it different from へやをでる?
ドアに手をかけた:put a hand on the door?
there are tons of other usages i saw and let pass because i thought even when you remove the verb from its sentence the sentence seems to more or less make sense but that certainly can’t be…

Well, in this case I’d say it adds a different nuance.

へやをでる would just mean ‘she left the room’, whereas へやをかけでる makes me think she ran out of the room.

By the way, if you want to reply to multiple people you can quote the different things you’re replying to all in one post :slightly_smiling_face:

For this chapter as well, this has been a very useful thread to me, thanks everyone!

For some reason, this one went a bit better on the overall comprehension side fore me. (Though you all say it is more difficult than the previous ones. It’s probably true.) So either I’m getting used to reading (this), or changing my methodology a bit has helped. Either way, looking forward to chapter 4.

Feels like my brain should be smoking though. Fitting, I suppose. xD
