排 different meaning proposal

I wonder if expel would be a better meaning for this kanji given that the associated vocabulary all has rather to do with expelling or emitting.

For comparison, JPDB uses “discharge” for this kanji.

Good thinking! Personally, I like “exclude” or “exhaust”, though neither are perfect.

Based on other words that use 排 though, probably “exclude” would be best:

排他(はいた)exclusion/exception

排日(はいにち)anti-Japanese

排斥(はいせき)boycott

排他主義(はいたしゅぎ)exclusionism

And the WaniKani examples you gave are also in the vein of excluding something or other, if you think about it (combustion waste, excess water, etc. – I believe that exhaust of all kinds, including breathing, involve excluding something).
