戯言 and 傑作 how are they related?

This is a weird question but in the zaregoto series by Nishio Ishin the main character has a habit of saying 「 戯言だけどね」basically saying “its all just nonsense”
There’s also another character which is thematically opposite to the main character called Zerozaki Hitoshiki「 零崎人識」who’s catchphrase is 「傑作だぜ」 in 2 different translations its translated into both “What a riot” and “What a masterpiece”.
Neither of which make a whole lot of sense in context. This is a work by Nishio Ishin who loves wordplay and puns (what kind of name is Zerozaki Hitoshiki anyway?) so these two phrases must be related somehow. Like they’re direct opposites. Only problem is, i can’t see that ‘masterpiece’ is the opposite of ‘nonsense’ (ok maybe a little) but i was wondering if there was a bit more of a solid connection between the kanji or something a bit deeper than that flimsy English relation.
