川 specification

Is 川 a catch all word for river, or does it only mean big rivers like the Rhine?

I’d say that if it’s big enough to be a river in English it’s big enough to be a 川.

But now I’m actually starting to wonder the opposite, if you can call a small stream a 川 as well…

EDIT: the Japanese wikipedia at least seems to define it as flowing water that is long and narrow. No mention of size.

Yes, it would be good to know if there is a different kanji for creek.

No, it’s just the word がわ from what I can find.

Thanks, by the way. How do you write the hiragana reading above the kanji?
