嵐のピクニック ⛈️ Book Club ・ Starting Dec 14th

I used the page numbers that the Kindle app gave me. They seemed consistent, in that changing the font size etc. didn’t change what text was on what page number. If anyone has a paperback I’d be very curious to see if they line up!

kindle virtual pages are usually different from physical editions I think. But not sure if anyone is reading this in a ‘real’ book…

I have a physical copy of this book. Here are the contents pages. The last page of the book is 200. :+1:

I have ~1900 pages of reading I’m trying to finish before the EOY (why do I do this to myself? ) so I might join starting in January with a clean slate.

kindle page numbers depend on your individual font size settings. Kindle locations are independent of your settings and are proportional to the number of characters. In this case it is easy to obtain them:

So you get the following schedule:

Thanks! I’ll amend the table when I’m done with work! For some reason my own Kindle app for Mac didn’t show the locs

It looks like the kindle app doesn’t use locations at all (I wonder why??).

Here is from my kindle app on Android:
(Aa - More - Reading Progress)

and here from the kindle Oasis:

I wonder how kindle gets the “Page in book”. Amazon Japan shows three editions of the book:

  • Kindle: print length 143 pages
  • Hardcover: print length 185 pages
  • Paperback: print length 200 pages

Just as a reminder, let’s hide spoilery discussions inside of a details tag with the title of the story, so that latecomers have an easier time sifting through the discussion

As I was reading the story I was wondering where it was going to go, what with it being quite a short story and all…

… but I certainly did not see that coming :joy:

Certainly impressed with the pacing of the story and the way it was wrapped up in the final paragraph. But what do I take away from this story? “The best way to reform troubled children is with the implication of violence”?

I was also definitely not expecting the ending. On one hand, I felt a bit of pity towards the narrator, but on the other hand, she brought it upon herself and honestly, I couldn’t see a lot of redeeming traits in her personality. The story of the sensei was quite shocking though, how unfortunate that it took the direction it did.

Overall, I did enjoy it quite a bit. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I found the writing style easy to follow and quite interesting, so it was a smooth read for me. While it’s quite introspective, the relatively simple language and the short format invites you to read. I’m looking forward to the next stories.

Just finished the first story, took me a while as I’m reading with pre teen children (my sister’s) running around etc.

I’ll probably wait until I’m flying back till I start the next as I think these stories are the right length to read in one go but I couldn’t!

Another pretty wild story! So correct me if I’m wrong, but there was never a flesh and blood boyfriend? She is just in an obsessive relationship with an imaginary entity that ‘comes to her’ in moments of pareidolia?

Don’t know if it’s just me, but I felt this story was a little bit more difficult. There were many sentences where I understood all the words and grammar and still had trouble fitting it all together in my head.

To be honest, I’m not sure. The fact that she talks about “彼” there rather than あなた in the rest of the story makes me wonder if there was, but I was a bit lost when reading that section.

I uh… Don’t know what I expected here. I kind of related to the narrator as I was also a reluctant child who didn’t want to learn the things I was told to do, and hung out with a rowdier crowd. But at the same time, I left the story feeling puzzled as to the exact meaning it was trying to convey. The last few sentences felt very “we’re all trapped somehow” but it didn’t quick click. Hmm.

Oof i feel like sleep deprived and sick is not the state I should have read this in. This feels like something high school kids would be assigned to read in class. What’s the significance of the faces, the curtain, the person(?) she kept in her room? She seems to be an unreliable narrator having a bit of a mental break. I feel like I should reread this sometime with more brain power

I wrote the above before reading both your comments and feel reassured that it’s not just me being tired that made this hard :joy: Language wise I agree that it wasn’t difficult, but meaning wise it was not at all straight forward!

Uh…what. This feels like a moral tale but I’m so confused :sob: Are they all dolls?? Like:

彼らのスーツは、スーツに見える不思議な皮膚だった

and then they stop coming around as much because people don’t believe in them?? Why did 次郎 cover himself in glue and attach himself to a suited attacker?? So many questions. Did anyone understand this?

lmao I thought it was seaweed :joy: Makes a lot more sense now!

That kind of reminds me of Discworld (specifically The Hogfather).

That’s the sense I got as well! It felt a bit like one of those old-timey tales, didn’t it? I imagine it’s a commentary on the unpredictability of life and that you might as well go along with it, because it can’t be stopped anyway? And maybe the fact that they stopped coming as often when people stopped believing in them is a commentary on the fact that these days ‘we’ (as mankind) feel like we can and should control all aspects of life, which means that we are not embracing chaos and rolling with the punches as much?
