Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy! (even tho, to be fair, there is no real story in that book and not much to spoil).

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
  • When asking for help, please mention the page number or a the very least the chapter number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

We’re done!! Overall I enjoyed reading these, but because they’re such short stories, they end up feeling a lot denser and with more complicated/varied vocabulary. I feel like I got a lot of practice identifying unfamiliar kanji, handwriting, some fairly simple puns - a lot of new skills!

Vocab:

うわの空 - absent-mindedness

Favorite stories: the sea wind gumball machine, the undersea flashlight, this final story about the “parallel world”

Least favorite stories: the shaved ice and now cream stew polar bear stories

Thank you for choosing a lovely book, even if it is not as plot-driven as some of the others. I have bought volume 2 to read, and this book club (along with my Japanese class, Wanikani, and other learning) has really helped my reading: I have been reading subsequent volumes of the ABBC book Gal and Dino :sauropod: and am finding that it’s so much easier than previously. Since I read in English and Spanish for enjoyment, I’m glad that I’m getting to the level where I can do that in Japanese.

@simboubou I hope you have time to read and enjoy the book in the future!

やった!

I’m not sure I was really looking forward to this book, but I had an excellent time reading it. Thanks for choosing it! Things like the fairly simple art style that didn’t appeal to me at first actually did an excellent job of creating the book’s dreamlike atmosphere. It was a lot of fun to see where each new chapter would go.

In terms of language, this was closer to my level than a lot of other things I’ve been reading lately, and I feel a lot more comfortable reading and encountering kanji than I did before.

I got the book way after you all had started. But, I really like it. It is a good first book for me even though there are lots of kanji in it I don’t know and it will take me long time to read. I have picked up other books in stores, but almost everything I could even begin read seemed to be aimed at children or at least at people much younger than I am. Thank you.

Gosh, this was such a wonderful read. It definitely took a lot more effort than I thought it would; I think @mgevaert is exactly right in that the vocab varies so much from chapter to chapter that it was a mental workout. While it was definitely above my level vocab-wise, the grammar always felt comfortable and presented in a much different style from other things I’ve read. This really felt more like a storybook of sorts, and the whimsical artwork was fantastic.

I look forward to reading this again someday when I have a better comprehension of the language. I have a feeling I’ll get much more out of it, and it’ll be one of those books that’s a true pleasure to reread multiple times.

Thank you to @simboubou for the fantastic suggestion and for leading the club! This was my first foray into the Beginner Book Club and it was a great way to start!

Oh, and also, I really loved the bonus chapter. It was so cute!!!
