勇む does not state whether it's transitive or intransitive

@Mods
This word is only listed as a godan verb but is not labelled as transitive or intransitive and I only found out it was intransitive by looking it up myself on jisho, so it might be useful to add that as a label.

@Mods what do you say?

I’m not sure I agree that this is equivalent to “intransitive” in English grammar. It seems to me that it’s neither, and that’s why it’s often classified as simply “godan” in Japanese grammar, not transitive or intransitive. :thinking: This is a really good topic!

P.S: Also one of my least/most favourite fictional characters. :laughing:

Take a look at the jisho.org entry

Also it doesn’t accept “to encourage” as a correct answer

There’s a whole bunch of verbs that aren’t labeled. Really annoying for me because I had to manually check all of them. Here’s a list:

言う 5 trans/intrans
役に立つ 8 intrans
持つ 9 trans/intrans
楽しむ 10 trans
病む 10 trans/intrans
気付く 11 intrans

斬る 46 trans
阻む 46 trans
貼る 48 trans/intrans

Oh also a lot of する verbs are unlabeled too. Like the vast majority of them, I never checked all of those.

Hey everyone! I have an update from the content team!

  • We’ve added the intransitive verb label to the word type of 勇む.
  • For other verbs in general, we are planning to review and set rules for when to add those word types, and do an overhaul in the future.
