充 Allocate

Hello,
the radical and kanji 充 are named Allocate.
Yet the word examples seem to be closer to a notion of fullness (“fullness”, “recharging”, “resupply”, etc).

How did this kanji happened to be named ‘allocate’? it does not seem to help on the radical mnemonics either.
in jisho, one word has a connection (“充当”) but it is not used on WK. Was it part of the WK words in the past?

Regards

I’m not really sure what you’re asking. How do things get full, recharged, or resupplied? Things are allocated to them. It makes a lot of sense to me, but maybe I’m not understanding what you’re asking.

Could be that they picked a synonym that fits better with the mnemonics that’re being used, or that seemed more likely to stick in people’s minds.

Hi,
yes, you correctly answered my question. The connection between ‘allocating’ and ‘filling’ was not so obvious to me, but English is not my native tongue (or maybe I was unconsciously restricting these words to their very distinct computer-language meanings).

あてる (to set aside) and あてがう (to allocate) are indeed meanings associated with 充.

Gotcha. Glad I could help! The word has a bit of nuance to it for sure.

As a fellow non-native I didn’t know that nuance either and actually had no idea what allocate meant at all until I got the radical! A nice unexpected plus to Wanikani is definitely that I periodically learn new English words as well

I’ve also wondered about this one - and cursed the chosen meaning! Allocate did not stick in my mind at all! And now it’s used in vocab for recharge etc. So…I’m still on the fence on if I’ve manged to correctly alot a memory slot for this kanji…>_> :drum:

Ooo. I was about to comment about how much I missed Hyperbole and a Half, then I discovered she’s got a new book out. Gonna have to pick it up next time I’m in Kinokuniya.
