何をしてくれたかって Example sentence?

フグ市長は好きですが、私たちの地域に何をしてくれたかって聞かれると、まだ疑問です。

This is translated as “I like Mayor Fugu but if I was asked what he could do for our community, I still have my doubts.”
But I read it as “what has he done for”.

Is there some grammar here I am not understanding or is this just a poor translation?

You are correct I think. Maybe the original was meant to be read as “but if I was asked he could do (in the past) for our community”?

That’s one point, but then again there is no “could” in the Japanese sentence…
