自分が侮られることに関して、モニカは怒りを覚えたことがない。どちらかというと、妙に持ち上げられる方が困る。
She only did the impossible, after all; what’s with all the praise, anybody could’ve done that!
And after that conversation they had: I wonder if she would’ve gotten angry on behalf of a friend if it happened to them? Not getting angry for getting looked down upon might just be because she has such low self-esteem, so I could see her getting angry for someone else. You know, if she could get angry; I’m not sure we’ve actually seen that. On the other hand, the “you are responsible for learning the rules yourself instead of blindly believing other people” would probably apply generally for her, and shows how little trust she puts in other people… 
「わたしは、チェスができれば、それでいいので……」
モニカは残った駒を盤に並べ、エリオットを見る。
「対局、お願いします」
モニカの顔から表情が抜け落ちた。その幼い顔にオドオドとした様子はなく、静かに凪いだ目はエリオットの初手を待っている。
“Enough words. Let’s mop the floor with you.”
フェリクスは運動神経が悪く、鈍臭い少年だった。
He changed a lot since then, huh?
社交ダンスも下手くそ。物覚えが悪くて勉強の成績も悪い。本当に何をやらせても駄目な、グズでノロマだった。
おまけにフェリクスは酷い人見知りだった。人前に出ると上手く喋ることができず、すぐに舌を嚙んで俯いてしまう。挨拶すらまともにできない。
Monica?!
「木から落ちたのは、私が上手に木登りをできなかったのが悪いんだ。だから、エリオットを責める理由が思いつかない」
まるで、それが当然と言わんばかりの口調だった。
I can see why we’re getting this story right now 
（あぁ、ようやく合点がいったぞ……だからあいつは、ノートン嬢を構いたがるのか！）
Yup. I didn’t mention it since Felix’ thoughts already alluded to it in the last volume, but that vignette really drove home how similar to Monica Felix once was.
Also, think those thoughts while you still have enough mental space to think them, Eliott. Things are going to get rough for you in a bit!
「俺の叔父はあろうことか平民の女に入れ込み、正妻にした。純朴で心の優しい娘だと叔父は言っていたよ。だが、結局その女は叔父の金を使い込んだ。裏切られた叔父は……首を吊ったよ」
その変わり果てた姿を一番に発見したのは、大好きな叔父にチェスを教わりに来ていたエリオットだ。
あの時の光景は、今でもエリオットの目に焼き付いている。
叔父の屋敷は、金目の物が殆ど無くなっていた。元平民の妻が叔父の死を知り、金目の物を握りしめて逃げ出したのだ。自らが自殺に追いやった男を弔いもせずに。

モニカが代表に選ばれても、フェリクスもシリルもいつも通りの彼らだ。
迷惑そうな顔をしたり、やっかんだりなんてしない。
Yep. Usually people don’t react with petty jealousy when their comrades achieve greatness, you know?
いつもは暗く陰っている茶の目が、光を乱反射して若葉色にキラキラと輝く。
「本当に……なんでもいいん、ですか？」
I have absolutely no idea what she’s going to wish for. Curious!

Haha. Occasionally, he actually does have a pretty good read on Monica.
その時は、とびきり稀少な本を贈呈して、子リスを仰天させるのも、それはそれで面白そうだ。
I mean, I guess in general “yes”, but she’s probably going to ask you for something very specific. Whatever that something is.
(And also, it’s probably going to be rather out there, considering this is Monica.)
「ステイルメイトになるように、全力でやりました！」
自爆した。
「やっぱり最初っから引き分け狙ってたんだな！ 知ってるか？ それを世間では手加減って、言、う、ん、だ、よ！」
Haha. I was wondering earlier how it only turned out to be a stalemate! So… was Monica actually considerate?
And as a side note, Eliott… I’m not sure you have any right to be angry with her after what you pulled in the first game
「ステイルメイトになるパターンの検証がしたかったんですぅぅぅ……」
Ah, that makes more sense than her being considerate 
「子リスって呼ぶの、やめてほしい、ですっ！」

「あ、あの、せめて、他の皆さんのように、ノートン嬢とか、ノートン会計とか……っ」
「君の要望は子リス呼びをやめてほしいということだろう？ 新しい呼び方について、特に指定はなかったはずだ」
Well, that’s on her. Guess she never read any stories about wish-granting entities.

だが、ラナはガタッと椅子を鳴らし、前のめり気味になりながらモニカに言った。
「すごいじゃない！」
Yes, and again, that’s how normal people react when their friends do something great.
「ねぇ、そういえば対戦校は今年も同じところなの？」
「でしょうね。同じ三大名門校……院とミネルヴァとの交流試合という名目だから」
Ah. So that’s how she will meet Bernie again. I should’ve gotten that earlier when it was clear that they are playing against another school, really.
Apart from the emotional problems, the more pressing one is probably: How is she going to protect her undercover identity?

I’m so glad Louis got her to come out of that mountain hut.
Okay, I guess the most pressing thing isn’t the undercover identity protection after all - I shouldn’t have underestimated her reaction. But the problem of her identity being easily uncovered still seems like a problem without any obvious solutions. Magic, somehow? It feels like something to confer with Louis about.
I read this chapter ages ago, but somehow forgot to comment and just kept on reading at the snail’s pace that’s my new normal now. Very glad about your live reaction posts - they remind me what actually happened this chapter.
