今回のコルセットは、体形補正よりも姿勢矯正の意味合いの方が強いらしい。確かに、猫背になるとコルセットが体に食い込むので、嫌でも背筋を伸ばさざるをえない。
更にラナは、顔色を明るく見せる化粧をモニカに施していく。

It’s nice of Lana to think about that! I was wondering why she was doing all of that on the day that Monica needs to concentrate. When she originally called her over, I was thinking that it’ll be more of a pep talk or something like that.

I laughed out loud here.
歩きながら考えるのは、かつて友人だった少年、バーニー・ジョーンズのこと。
思えば、モニカにチェスの存在を教えてくれたのも彼だった。

そう言って彼は、小馬鹿にするように鼻を鳴らした。
Ah, okay, like this, not as in “he played chess”. Quite the opposite, apparently. I guess there’s hope then that the prologue was just to introduce us to her trauma, and not to introduce him as a character that Monica will have to face in this tournament.
引率教諭から視線を横にずらす。背後にいるミネルヴァの生徒は三人。前方にいる二人は見覚えのない顔だ。最後の一人は、他の二人に隠れていて顔が見えない。

「初めまして、ミネルヴァ代表のバーニー・ジョーンズです」

There’s lot of books after this, so she’s probably not going to be exposed not even a third into volume 3, but… is he really not going to recognize her? Will he recognize her, but keep quiet for some reason?
Can we just unleash Louis on him? He’s not going to be missed.
「バーニー・ジョーンズです。よろしくお願いします」
また肋が痛んだ。コルセットが食い込んでいる時は大抵、モニカの姿勢が悪くなっている時なのだ。
背筋、背筋、と自分に言い聞かせて姿勢を正し、モニカはバーニーの手を握り返す。
「……モニカ・ノートンです。よろしく、お願いします」
硬い声になってしまったが、嚙まずに言えた。
ラナは言っていた。人間の第一印象は姿勢と表情で決まる、と。
流石に他の皆のように、自然な笑みを浮かべるのは難しいが、それでも、ビクビクオドオドとした態度だけはとらないよう、モニカは唇をキュッと引き締めた。
いつもとは別人の気分、なんて言ったら大袈裟だが、それでもラナが施してくれた化粧は、モニカにほんの少しだけ勇気を与えてくれた。
Regardless of how that ends… well done, Monica!

エリオットが額に手を当ててため息をついたその時、セレンディア学園中堅、ベンジャミン・モールディングが芝居がかった仕草で両手を広げ、声を張り上げた。
「心配はご無用！ 我がセレンディア学園が奏でる優美な三重奏は必ずや衆目の心を摑むことでしょう！ 超絶技巧のピアノがノートン嬢、軽やかなバイオリンの調べがエリオットなら、私は聴く者の心を揺さぶる変幻自在のチェロ奏者！ あぁ、聴こえる、聴こえるぞ。我らの音楽的なチェスに魂を揺さぶられた観衆の心の叫びが！」
Haha. Nobody is going to pay attention to the crashing Monica immediately after this. Good save, Benjamin, even if unintended!
「……ボイド先生が俺を大将にした理由が、ようやく分かったぜ」
I also notice that there was not a single remark on how Bernie reacted to Monica’s greeting. Was he fooled? Did he recognize her, but kept silent for now?
Either way, I’m sure he’ll recognize her before all of this is over.
「貴女とお会いした時は、驚きました。昔の知り合いに似ていたもので。偶然なんですけどね、名前まで同じなんです」

I bet the name really didn’t help.
「おぅおぅ、オレ様の女に手ぇ出すんじゃねぇよ」

Well, partially at least, since Bernie seems pretty convinced that she’s the Monica he knew. This confrontation happened much earlier than I thought it would, story-wise. I’m curious how it’ll be resolved. Especially since it doesn’t seem like time has healed any wounds here.
