一体、目的は何なんですか
Found this context sentence for 目的 and am a little confused by the 何なん part. Is the second なん being used to ask for an explanation? Like なの？

Would it make more sense to you if instead of 何, 水 or any other noun was used?
一体、目的は水なんですか。
(Yes, it’s the contracted form of なの)

Ahhh ok, I think if it was なの in the sentence I wouldn’t have been so puzzled by it.

No problem! In this case it’s used to emphasise the fact that it’s more than Just A Question.
