Now I’m just giggling because I’m imagining someone from 1700 using a time machine and coming to our time and seeing all those hair color. Oh no, witches everywhere xD
Ah yeah, good point. Though not revealing itself is fun in it’s own right.
I haven’t gotten back to reading yet, lots to do and I’m very tired from being away from home driving a lot and stuff. Just something kinda cursed to share
Spoilers but if you've read much of Door 2 at all to see the new main character, that's all
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iD7dUNHXxNs
Been following Dan Hentschel for a while and as soon as I saw this new video my instant reaction was “that’s Bestia!”
Turns out Discourse will seemingly only nicely embed Youtube videos if it’s outside spoilers and hide details? Annoying!
Well that’s cursed for sure, lmao I can see how it would fit べステア
Finished Door 2! Spoilers
You know, I have forgotten SO many details and I remember there being a beast and his general struggles about being a human or not and everyone dying, but so much had left my mind by now the twists kind of work on me again lol. They imply this so well that I had actually started thinking he DID have the sprite that belongs to 幸正 .
Oh, I just got to reading @Akashelia 's post and it wasn’t a false memory haha, ok.
I’m the same way with the umineko line; I’m like the pointing soyjak image the moment I see it.
I’m excited I’m one step closer to watching samurai movies more comfortably, haha.
Yeah I had to look this up, it’s Nijntje apparently? A dutch word derived from a word for “little bunny.” It’s the original name of this cute little rabbit
I really like this door! Seeing how you all talk about the start being slower and etc it’s probably a little more to my personal preferences. I really like how it opens before unfolding into the main story; the desolate and ruined feeling comes across really strongly along with this bizarre beast that’s totally unlike anything we’ve seen in the story yet. I think the construction of Door 1 might be tighter; the structure here can feel unbalanced with all the reveals about 幸正’s past all at once once it really starts accelerating to its conclusion, but it hits well for me and I prefer it if I had to choose. The door is REALLY withholding about information so it sort of has to be this way.
The vocal songs that play during ポーリーン’s sections are so nice . I really love her as a character, horrible what happens to her and how grim those CGs of her death are. Very likeable as a sweet and goofy character, but one really determined and fearless when she has to be. The tragedy this time spirals so widely; it’s just horrible to be anyone at all mentioned in this story.
Oh thanks for looking that up, that’s cool!
Nice reading your thoughts. Although I did say that it was a bit slower at start, I too enjoyed the horror theme portrayed here, so it was still pretty cool even before the twist .
Thanks! Glad you liked it too.
More things I've been thinking about in regards to someone (full door 2 spoilers)
Been thinking a lot about 幸正, and specifically the decision to include his past of killing and torturing. Either way the stuff he does as a beast is still quite heinous, but I have to admit when he was just the beast, waking up as a confused, hurt, and scared man and suffering at the hands of everyone around him, he was more sympathetic. Again the period of his slaughter of everyone is brutal so I’m not downplaying that, but it’s sort of a “this sucks for everyone, bestia included” but I read that and it starts to shift into “oh this guy was just already the worst.”
In one way it’s easy to look at how he was bad “元から” or however the maid says it as more one-dimensional writing and not really a positive addition, but I think they mostly avoid that. He seems to have a lack of empathy in a time without the means to recognize and deal with that – yes he cares about a few women in his life in a way, but it’s framed so heavily as his ties to his 平穏 that maybe it’s not truly empathy for them, just a desire to keep those who treat him well and let him remain “human.” The fact that he does want to fight it, while we don’t get to dig to the core of what that means to him, keeps him feeling not cheaply evil. I’d need to, with this later knowledge, look at exactly how he talks to and thinks about the women for any hints where the feelings extend to and where they stop. But it’s interesting to think about that way.
It also simply serves to make the turn to slaughter more plausible – I’m willing to buy sufficiently bad circumstances breaking just about anyone, but this as a preexisting element of his personality does smooth over the way it happens. But I think what it does for his character is more important; he always had a bad side so it’s not just a cruel twist of fate from the shipwreck on. There was probably never a wholly happy ending awaiting him even with ポーリーン.

Haha funny to see what you remember
Oh cool!
Agreed, she was great, I forgot to acknowledge that. RIP ポーリーン
If my extrapolations are correct, by the time I reach door 8 there will be over 4000 kanji in my Anki Kanji deck, roughly half of which will be from this VN.
I guess I should just preemptively register for the Kanken.
If not for, IIRC, the test requiring you to also handwrite and stuff, I’ve had the thought before, haha. My Anki deck has gotten kinda ridiculous. Like yeah I definitely need to know 天鵞絨 in kanji form, who knows when that might come up!
Why do you need to extrapolate when you can get the numbers directly from Fata Morgana no Yakata – Prebuilt decks – jpdb?
You can export the deck (actually you need an add-on like this one to export), then import it in your Anki deck or process the output as you want and you know exactly what’s waiting for you
Never encountered it, is it from a game?
I didn’t know about this but I tend to cherry-pick the kanji I study heavily and I generate my own wanikani-style associated vocab lists, phono-semantic composition etc… So it’s not so easily automated.
That looks like a lot of work, good think you’re not making a 図鑑 too!
Well some of it is automated by cross-referencing Kanjidic and similar resources, but I couldn’t find anything reliable for the phono-semantic composition for instance so that’s all handmade:
I’ve seen it like twice IIRC but I don’t think it was ever in kanji; I’ve just been defaulting to learning the kanji form if there is one these days cause I have a problem . I THINK the first time I saw it was the book 怪人二十面相 ?
The nice part of this stuff is that when I’ve occasionally watched people stream games there are already tons of times I’ve seen the streamer stumbling on the reading of words that I didn’t even consider that out of the ordinary. Like they obviously were understanding the text fine and get the word but blanked on the meaning, but it’s cool to have that experience already. It’s one of those things where if someone isn’t actively a regular reader, there are plenty of words you come across that are trickier than you’d probably think.
I’ve read it as well so it’s in my DB, didn’t get any hit for it though
I searched; it is indeed in that book. Pretty early on around his first appearance. 大豆ほどもある、じつにみごとなダイヤモンドが六個、黒ビロードの台座の上に、かがやいていたのです。
I definitely don’t bother learning weird kanji forms unless they pop up organically, otherwise it’s just endless…
For instance I did add 硝子(ガラス)because it popped up in this VN a few times and I think I encountered it elsewhere before, so clearly it’s a somewhat useful form.
It’s probably the more logical approach, but I honestly don’t find it much more meaningfully difficult than learning a random thing in kana so I figure why not get them out of the way together, and I suppose I just enjoy it. I’m just bundling it when I learn a word for the first time; if it’s a word I already knew then I’d only be adding it as a card because I did come across a weirder kanji form. Which some writers just really like random kanji for words I’ve never seen anyone else use. Anyway I think plenty will serve me well when I read more old books; the level of Japanese I’m aiming for eventually is high enough I’m content doing it this way.
硝子 is definitely something I’ve seen enough times, yeah.
Bad news on that front.
