チーズスイートホーム: Week 5 Discussion (Chapters 13-15)

These chapters felt much better than last week’s. よかったね。

It also helped that I started reading it a bit differently, as in I didn’t try to use the tablet I’m reading it on to also look up words, instead I had my laptop beside me too. Not as relaxed reading, but also makes it less troublesome if I have to look up multiple words in a sentence.

Also overall more words I already knew in these chapters. Phew.

p101 - why is it ヨーヘーのやろお、and not something like ヨーヘーはやろお?I think I heard の can be used as は、but, on jisho it says that only about subordinate clauses, and this isn’t a subordinate clause, right?

Edit: In baby talk ら=だ、right? Yes.

やろお here is 野郎(やろう), which you can look up if you don’t know the meaning.

I can’t give any grammar explanation, but I hear 「nameのバカ」 in anime often, and 「nameの野郎(やろう)」 from time to time.

Here is an example (from となりのトトロ):

Just checking… あなた取引先の方がお待ちかねよ on page 113, is that the father saying to the lady that her clients must be waiting for her? I am a bit thrown cause I thought you wouldn’t normally use あなた in such a situation? And also the bubble style is different, does that signify anything?

This is the wife speaking to her husband (to give him an excuse to get out of there with Chi). The shape of the outlines of the balloon probably are because the wife is a bit flustered as she’s speaking.

The lady then then she needs to be going too (and we see her leaving as well immediately after).
