ゼノギアス // Week 3 // Chapters 5 through 8

Discussion

That black forest is TOO 黒! I could barely see even with the TV brightness turned up.

I get what’s it’s saying generally, but I think this might be my first time seeing 口 used like this?
フェイ 「悪いな。 俺も出口を探してる口なんだ。

Oooh juicy week. I had a bunch of notes after my first play session about how while Elly had a point she was also projecting her own guilt and denial on Fei, and then the game just outright says that when I sit down to finish the week. If I liked popcorn, I’d be munching on some. I have to say I do love when characters are hypocritical and/or completely self unaware. It’s fun! In fiction.

I have to agree that Fei right now doesn’t really have any drive. I expect his emotions are all over the place and he’s at least passively suicidal. He even says he doesn’t know what to do or where to go, since all he knows is Lahan. So he’s just going in the direction Citan points him to for lack of any reason not too

Speaking of, sure is a good thing Citan fixed up that flying crab last week! Glad he just knows how to do that and how to fly it! Model citizen, that one.

だけど、もし前のように途中で 暴走しそうになった時は、 俺ごと撃ってくれっ!if the crab is strong enough for that why not just shoot the dino directly…

人が誤った使い方さえしなければ、 それは良き力となり、我々を助けてくれるものと私は信じてます。Bold thing to say to someone who just witnessed his village become a battlefield due to two forces fighting over that “power”. And Citan just so happened to know how to fix a Gear? And speak Elly’s language? And all these political events? Guy is lil sus. (and talks too much I agree with Yui! pls stop with the kanji riddled polite speech I can only take so much)

Citan

Another detail to add is him clearly knowing something might go down when Fei got into Weltall to fight in Lahan. Like you could interpret it as being a general warning not to fight in the village, but when you add all these other bits up he seems to be aware of the possibility that Fei goes berserk.

Yup, feels like a very weird thing to worry about as one’s village is being burned down and turned into a battlefield.

I like those discussions, now I can’t wait for week 4  when it’s a well written game with characters that have some depth, it can be quite nice to have one whole week to dissect each sentence, instead of speed running the whole thing!

My theory for now is that both Fei and Citan were actually part of Ellie’s faction and are not “surface dwellers”, Fei was a past Gear pilot (maybe part of a program along Ellie), both snapped in the past and Fei was sent away/got lost and lost his memories until he was brought to ラハン by the mysterious shadow figure in the intro?
And Citan was sent along to keep an eye on him and see if he remembers anything for that time, I don’t remember if anyone has mentioned how long Citan has been in the village, could be decades or if he also suspiciously showed up just a couple years ago.
Unfortunately Citan is in that anime age range where he could be anything between late thirties to middle fifties and basically look the same. But he’s got a little kid, so maybe he got married only very recently when he arrived in ラハン?
BUT if they were both Gear pilots I wonder why Ellie didn’t recognize Fei… Maybe she’s having some memory issues of her own judging by that cutscene where she had apparently snapped and murdered a whole corridor of guys.
I’m confused but really intrigued, especially because I’ve realized I actually don’t remember anything so I actually get to re experience everything again.

I think Fei was possibly an orphan who was taken in by the woman we see in the flashback, who seems to be in church garb with the cross around her neck. So I don’t know if he was with the “up there” people or the church who repairs the mechs or maybe they are working together behind the scenes. Or maybe the church is recruiting orphans to build soldiers that they then sell to other factions…
