Are we playing the same week? I used one ゼータソル in the セラフィータ & トロネ fight and healed right afterwards before facing イド – the previous save point is a tiny detour on your way back.
ビリー has an AoE heal.
This isn’t quite as vitriolic as Daisoujou’s review, but you are in strong agreement. It’s clearly a love or hate relationship…
I’ll pass on defending it. I can’t take off the rose-colored shades even if I wanted to. I guess first playing this much closer to release, in English and when I was much younger was a triple blessing in hindsight. I can trust the process now while enjoying the added nuance and character in the Japanese script.
Xenogears does the cardinal sin of storytelling by doing both show AND tell. I’ve grown to love the in medias res style and asking the player to put in some work, although we’ve made it very hard for ourselves by doing this in Japanese and in small weekly bites…

I didn’t say anything back then, but I’ll do now, as a caution: the game is about to bloom and transcend from its JRPG vestiges. You’re still not going to be reading a book, but the gameplay is going to get better by the process of elimination.
