Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Interesting how 泉 got captured right after leaving 浜口’s place. It doesn’t look like 佐久間 has any clue regarding the existence/whereabouts of the package, but I wonder if he’ll be able to figure something out.

I had one highlighted question from this week’s reading.

But first

, Hamaguchi says

I had to read this a few times. Did he really just say what I thought he said?
I knew that I didn’t trust him, but I had way underestimated his depth of sleaziness. (Obviously Izumi did too, and when she realised that in the very next section, it became clear that Hamaguchi’s intentions were quite as dishonourable as they appeared to be).

A kitten

Izumi has belated realisation of her near miss. She realises what it usually means when a girl stays over at a guys house. But then there is reference to a boy staying at his mum’s house and a female cat, and I got lost…

any help here?

And a theory about Izumi's father, Kuroki and Mayumi (possible spoiler, but then I might be wrong)

I’m coming to think that I was off the mark in my guess that the package wasn’t drugs.
But it doesn’t make any sense at all that Izumi’s father would be a drug courier. But it has occurred to me this week that perhaps he was undercover. I wonder if Kuroki was his handler and Mayumi was a co-worker of some kind.
That might explain the letter from Izumi’s father (he mentions something about Mayumi being able to put everything in a different light/offer a different perspective on everything…)

Finally finished this week’s section, just in time for the next week.

I think you’re right. I was also not that sure of the details here, but it does sound ultra sleezy. Especially when he follows it up later with
Izumi herself and Sakuma also think he’s sus, so we’re all in agreement here.

Unfortunately, I also couldn’t figure out the part with the cat.

Rest of the chapter

So, “Mayumi” gave herself away to Tomoo and another group enters the chat. Since it’s already Saturday, I guess I’ll just keep reading instead of speculating about any of it.

Cat analogy

I can’t say for sure, but I understood that Izumi is trying to compare the situation where she would stay over at Hamaguchi’s to other situations and just saying it’s not the same. So it’s not like a child-parent relationship (since he’s much older). And he is probably not treating her like a female cat, meaning that he’s not treating her like a cute pet or something you take care of - rather, he was planning to treat her “as a woman” (and sexually abuse her in this case). So that’s what she means by ちょっと違う. That’s my interpretation at least.

WOWWW after his previous interactions with medakagumi and Izumi, even after the bizarre kiss, I wasn’t at all expecting Hamaguchi to be a rapist. Big yikes. And then I was throwing my hands up over Sakuma being all “well maybe I shouldn’t have let her go because Hamaguchi is a playboy”— bro, are you not like a 40 year old gangster who sees this girl as a daughter? Why are you so naïve that you didn’t even tell her!?

cat thing

I, too, struggled to understand the thing about cats. I did a couple google searches and found a reference to an old story in goo jisho— a french novel about a sort of love triangle between a guy, his wife, and the cat he dotes on called ‘La Chatte’. No idea if there’s actually a connection or not but I think it supports @snowwater’s interpretation :woman_shrugging:

Cameraman Mayumi is a fake after all! Another ‘Kuroki is actually a baddie’ point to go with the others.

Running a bit late because of my interruptions of the past few weeks but caught up to this chapter today.
